Now that the dust has mostly settled from our recent e-vent. It’s time to begin reflection. Reflection on a personal & professional level. What YOU just executed Was unprecedented. The DIV opened an Air Bridge & maintained it long enough to conduct the largest air lift in U.S. history. Say whatever you want about the operation, & you are probably right. However, what YOU did was nothing short of a miracle. YOU were called, & YOU…became. YOU became whatever was asked of YOU. YOU found the gaps & filled them. I thank you, the U.S. Army thanks you, your country thanks you. I am humbled to walk amongst giants every day. As leaders we take a lot of things for granted. We do a horrendous job of explaining things, tech, doctrine, terms, tactics, techniques, etc, etc, etc… We throw around terms like NEO & never take the time to explain it to you. YOU just executed a NEO. In an attempt to correct our leadership shortcomings, a NEO is: Noncombatant Evacuation Operations (NEO) is the ordered (mandatory) or authorized (voluntary) departure of civilian noncombatants & nonessential military personnel from danger in an overseas country to a designated safe haven, typically within the continental United States. Overseas evacuations could occur under a variety of circumstances, including civil unrest, military uprisings, environmental concerns, & natural disasters. The Department of State (DOS) recommends an evacuation, & the Department of the Army—as the Department of Defense (DOD) Executive Agent for repatriation (RE-PAT) planning & operations—coordinates the execution of NEO. The ability to perform a quick, calculated turn is important, but what about while your vehicle is in reverse? Enter, the J-Turn. The J-turn’s objective is your vehicle maintaining its course, but turning 180 degrees in seconds. You’ll end up pointing forward without loosing much momentum. It’s important to know your vehicle, & its limitations. Let’s go over the steps to complete a successful J-Turn. For automatic transmission: 1. Start with the vehicle in reverse & remember “when you reverse, things come from behind you“ 2. Ensure you have room on both sides of the vehicle, from your starting position, to where you want to end up 3. Accelerate to 30-35 mph & don’t let off of the gas 4. Position your hands at the 2 o’clock & 8 o’clock position on the wheel 5. In one motion come off the gas & turn the wheel counter-clockwise at least 1/2 of a turn 6. The vehicle will turn very sharply to the driver’s right 7. While almost through the 180 degree turn, use another quick movement in the opposite direction to bring the wheels back in line 8. Put the car into drive & accelerate If you don’t maintain the required speed, or turn the wheel sharply enough, the vehicle won’t complete the turn. For manual transmission: It is exactly the same, but while selecting first gear to make your getaway, you’ll need to double clutch 1. Press the clutch in 2. Shift to neutral 3. Clutch out 4. Clutch in and shift into first This adds more of a challenge to the maneuver, but if you practice the double clutch it can be done easily Will you join me in my pursuit for continuous flow-state? The reason to park #tactically is that it just makes sense. Yes, it takes some effort to reverse into your driveway, or parking spot, but the benefits far outweigh the work. When backing out of a parking space your field of view is limited looking through a rear-view mirror, & can cause you to miss oncoming traffic, people walking, etc. I always repeat to myself no matter where I am, “keep your head on a swivel.” This mnemonic forces me stay focused & observant. This goes for whether I’m at a restaurant, taking my son for a walk, or driving. I always work to stay aware of my surroundings & potential threats but, at the same time not drawing attention to sporadic movements or myself in general. I take this same approach when driving & by tactically parking, I gain an advantage of being more aware of what’s around me at all times, to include possible threats. There’s just something you loose when backing out. Make yourself back into your driveway or parking spot next time you come home, you’ll see what I mean when you go to leave. The last & definitely not least important reason to tactically park is simply being able to quickly leave your location. It’s tremendously faster to jump in the vehicle, start it up & immediately pull out, rather than having to reverse out into traffic. Not to mention, safer. This stands true goes for swiftly leaving during an emergency situation where seconds count, or could even be for those situations where a Zombie is chasing you. Seriously though, next time you park somewhere start war-gaming it. “What would happen if I had to leave in a hurry?” “What if I was being chased? When you start thinking this way, it will become evident that you should tactically park. One thing you won’t see in Secret Service or PSD work is backing out with a Principal on-board. We’ve often talked about certain aspects of disappearing here at 82 ABN DIVARTY, I get most of the questions in particular. This is due to my past training & experiences. Questions such as an untraceable wireless phone & how to escape & evade in an urban environment, but never putting it all together & outright vanishing. I am not going to go through the details of the how, here in open source. Sorry to disappoint, I am not looking for trouble. Hit me up, and we can discuss it over good Scotch. However, there is a fantastic article on Wired Magazine’s Web site titled “Writer Evan Ratliff Tried to Vanish: Here’s What Happened.” Ratliff, put his money where his mouth is. Wired offered a $5,000 bounty, $3,000 of which would come out of Ratliff’s own pocket, to anyone who could locate him, take his picture & say a password. Ratliff decided to vanish for a month, from 15AUG to 15SEP. He wasn’t going off the grid, but trying to drop his current life & pick up another. He opened up his personal details to the public and challenged them to find him. The article is full of daily disguises, false identities, pre-paid wireless phones & using cash for as many things as possible. It’s about true privacy & avoiding digital fingerprints. If anything, the article poses some interesting questions, many are what we have talked about here & will talk about in the future. I am sure of that.
