“Bleakspeckle?” he asked incredulously, looking over at where the warrior lay. He was alone in the shade on the other side of camp, ears angled backwards and tail flicking. “Why?”

“I haven’t seen him eat yet. Besides, didn’t Twigtooth say that when we become apprentices, we have to make sure everyone is fed?”

“I thought she said we have to make sure Shadetuft and the sick are fed. And we aren’t even apprentices yet.”

But Freezekit was already standing and collecting the vole Rimepaw had dropped off for him.

Tanglekit glanced at Bleakspeckle again. His tail was still flicking. “He doesn’t like us. You’re just going to make him mad.”

“Can’t be mad at someone who gives you food!” Freezekit said cheerily. 

“Bleakspeckle can!” But Freezekit simply waved him off with his tail and began trotting over with his vole. Tanglekit groaned and hid his face in his paws. He almost couldn’t watch. 

A moment later, he lifted his head.

Almost.

He looked up just in time to see Bleakspeckle notice Freezekit’s approach. He saw the way his lips curled back in a snarl, but he was too far away for Tanglekit to hear exactly what he hissed. Whatever it was, it stopped Freezekit dead in his tracks. A few more words were exchanged, then Freezekit tried to give him the vole. Bleakspeckle’s expression darkened, and he lashed out with his paw, sending the vole flying into the brush surrounding camp. This time, he yowled at Freezekit loud enough for the words to carry over, “Leave me alone!”

It was enough for Freezekit to finally get the message. Fur puffed out and eyes wide, he hightailed it back to Tanglekit, who didn’t even try to hide his smirk. “I told y—”

“I get it!” Freezekit hissed, quickly licking his fur to make it lie flat again. “You don’t have to say it!” He sighed and looked to where the vole had disappeared. “I should probably go find that…”

Tanglekit snickered as he passed him the rest of his mouse. “I’ll help you look for it later.”
