โI need to talk to you,โ you announce, walking into the room uninvitedโand frankly not caring about the lack of decorum on your part.ย Not that Penelope would mind, of course, she has done the same toย youย multiple times over the past however many years of your friendship, after all.ย ย
Penelope turns to you on her swivel chair, her eyebrows rising with surprise, โHello to you... too?โย
You blow outย a breath, hands on your hips. โSorry. Hi.ย Hello. Greetings.ย Iโmย great. How areย you?โย
Penelope narrows her eyes at you likeย sheโsย running a full psychological evaluation, and then, much to your dismay, a wicked smile widens on her face. โYouโre flustered.โย
โI amย fine.โย
โYouโre lying.โย That one is accusatory, not thatย sheโsย wrong, but also not something you expect.ย
You groan. โPenelope, Iย needย to talk to you.โย
โOh, okay,โ she chirps, rolling her chair closer likeย sheโsย about to conduct a deposition. โIs this aboutย theย thing? Or likeโฆ theย thing?โย
โPenelope,โ you warn.ย
She gasps dramatically. โItโs theย thing.โย
Before you can respond, another voice cuts in from the doorway. โWhoโs talking about a thing?โ JJ walks in holding two files, looking far too perceptive for your liking.ย
โOh perfect,โ Penelope beams. โYouโre just inย time,ย weโre having a crisis.โย
โWe are not having a crisis,โ you snap. โNo crisis. Zero crisis. Negative crisis.โย
JJ raises a brow. โRight.ย Thatโsย why you look likeย youโreย going to burst into flames if I say Spen-โย
Handsย stillย on your hips, your eyes narrow as you look at the two blonds in front of you. โListen, do you guys want to hear how Spencerย Reidย is using sex to convince me to come back to the FBI, or not?โย
There is a beat of utter silence, then:ย
Penelope slams both hands onto her desk. โYES.โย
JJ nearly drops her files. โIโokay, hang onโwhat?โย
You pinch the bridge of your nose. โDonโt make me say it twice.โย Youโreย not above begging, and thankfully,ย it seems youย wonโtย have to.ย ย
Penelope leans forward, elbows on her desk, and chin in her hands. โOh, youโre absolutely saying it twice.โย
JJ sets her files aside and crosses her arms. โStart from the beginning. Andย donโtย leave out details,โ she mentions you to sit, โhave a seat, girlfriend.โย
The BAU has been understaffed for months.ย Theyโreย drowning in cases. Emily asked youโgently, in that soft voice she uses when she knowsย sheโsย asking for a huge favor, though also respectfully,ย considerย coming back.ย Youโdย saidย youโdย think about it. That wasย threeย weeks ago. And after three weeks of sexual manipulation delivered in absolute precision of your boyfriend, youย donโtย know whether to curse or thank Emily Prentiss for the best sex of your life.ย
It had started so innocent, orย thatโsย what you thought. After spendingย the first couple of months of your relationshipย in your own bubble,ย it was easy to forget the world outside of itโQuantico, cases, the constant weight of being needed.ย Youโdย left the BAU for a reason, whether it was because of burnout or grief. Orย perhaps aย quiet, desperate need to be something other than useful.ย ย
And Spencer knew that, ofย course,ย he did.ย ย
Thatโsย why he never talked aboutย whyย you left.ย
And everย so foolishly, you thought you had an understanding between theย two of you: he keeps the horrors of theย office at the office, and you keep your peaceful, civilian life at home. But Spencer Reidย doesnโtย play byย the rules whenย heโsย determined,ย and apparently,ย heโsย determinedย to have you back in a tactical vest beside himโandย he is not afraid to play dirty to get what he wants.ย
โHeโs using psychological conditioning!โ you hiss, pacing the small, tech-cluttered space. โItโsย subtle.ย Itโsย genius.ย Itโsโฆย itโsย exhausting.โย
Penelopeโs eyes are practically vibrating with excitement. โExplain. Give me the data points. I need a spreadsheet.โย
โTwo nights ago,โ you begin, countingย off onย your fingers. โI was telling him about my new jobโthe one with the reasonable hours and the zero chance of being kidnapped by a serial killer. Heย didn'tย say a word. He just started kissing my neck, right behind my ear, and whispered that my brain was clearly suffering from a lack of โenvironmental stimulationโ.โย
JJ lets out a suppressed snort, trying to hide her reaction behind a well-timed cough. โHe did not.โย
โHe did! And then he told me,ย while his hands were doing things that should be illegal in at least twelve statesโthat the adrenaline spike of a high-stakes case is the only thing that truly satisfies a mind like mine.โ You stop, breathless and red-faced. โI almost agreed to sign my reinstatement papers right there on the headboard.โย
โOh sugarplum,โ Penelope sighs, โthatย wouldโveย made our poor Unit Chief Prentissย a very happyย lady.โย ย
โEmilyย wouldย probably giveย him a medal for recruitment,โ you groan, finally collapsing into the ergonomic chair Penelope practically shoved under you. โItโsย not justย the talking,ย itโsย theย methodology.ย Last night, I told him I was looking at weekend getaways, and he started tracing the line of my jaw with his thumb.ย He looked me dead in the eye and said that while relaxation is a biological necessity, my specific cognitive profile thrives on the 'bonding through shared trauma' that only the team provides.โย
JJ leans againstย herย chair, anย impressedย smirk playing on her lips. โHeโsย rewarding the thought of the BAU with dopamine,ย kind of likeย Pavlovโs dogs.โย
โHeโs rewarding it with a lot more than dopamine, JJ!โ you cry out, gesturing wildlyย atย your own flushed face. โI went to his place toย standย my ground. I had a whole speech prepared about work-life balance and the beauty of corporate consulting. Iย didn'tย even get past the foyer before he started talking about the 'unmatched neurological intimacy' of working a joint profile.โย
โAnd?โ Penelope prompts, leaning so farย forwardย sheโsย nearly nose-to-noseย with you. โWhat happened to the speech?โย
โThe speech is inย the trash. Along with myย resolve. Andย probably myย dignity,โ you mutter. โHe backed me against the door and whisperedโย literallyย whisperedย into my skinย that if I came back, weย wouldnโtย have to waste twenty minutes every evening catching each other up on our days becauseย weโdย have lived them together. Then he showed me exactly what he meant by 'efficiency'.โย
Thereโsย a beat of silence in the room. Penelope looks likeย sheโsย justย witnessedย a miracle, and JJ is shaking her head in disbelief.ย โI always knew he was a genius,โ JJ says softly, โbut I didn't realize he was aย diabolicalย genius.โย
โI honestlyย donโtย know whether toย be happy about all theย โfulfillmentโย Iโveย experienced,ย orย file a formal grievance with the Bureau for unethical recruitment tactics,โ you finish, burying your face in your hands.ย
Penelope lets outย aย sound that is half-gasp, half-giggle. โIย wouldnโtย file that grievance, honey. Keep that gift horse,ย andย itsย extremely high IQ,ย exactly where it is.โย
โItโs not a gift!โ you protest, though the way your heart flutters says otherwise. โItโsย a trap! A beautiful, six-foot-one,ย sweater-vested trap.ย Heโsย making me associate my career with myโฆ my physiological satisfaction.โย
โI think you mean yourย very specific needs,โ JJ clarifies with a wink,ย her eyes dancing with an unholy amusement. โIโmย sorryย weโreย enjoying yourย suffering,โ JJ finishes, clearly not sorry at all, โbut this is objectively fascinating.โย
โFascinating?โย Youย repeat weakly through your fingers. โHeโs weaponizing emotional intimacy.โย
Penelope tilts her head thoughtfully. โCounterpoint: heโs using his natural gifts in the service of love and workplace retention.โย
โThat is not better!โ you groan.ย
JJ pushes off the desk and begins pacing slowly, slipping into the same thoughtful cadence she uses whenย theyโreย building a profile. โOkay,ย letโsย look at the facts. Spencer is patient, highly strategic, andโโย
โDangerously persuasive,โ you interrupt.ย
โโand deeply attached to you,โ JJ finishes calmly. โSo,ย from his perspective, getting you back at the BAU solves multiple problems at once.โย
โName one,โย you challenge.ย
Penelope raises a finger. โOne: he misses working with you.โย
Another finger. โTwo: the team misses you.โย
JJ adds a third. โThree: youโre extremely good at the job.โย
โAnd four,โ Penelope says brightly, โhe gets to see you more often and apparently continue hisโฆ conditioning experiments.โย
You stare at her. โYouโre both the worst.โย
Before either of them can respond, a familiar voice drifts in from the hallway.ย
โWell, technically it isnโt conditioning.โ And suddenly, all three of you freezeโbecause the voiceย doesnโtย belong to either one of you.ย ย
Spencer stands in the doorway, leaning against the frame with a stack of case files tucked under one arm and a deceptively mild expression on his face. He looks every bit the boyish professor in his layered knits and slightly oversized messenger bag, but the way his eyes lock onto yoursโdark, focused, and humming with a terrifyingly sharp intellectโsuggestsย heโsย heard much more of this conversation thanย youโdย like.ย
"Technically," he repeats, stepping into the room with that rhythmic, long-legged stride that usually makes your heart skip for all the right reasons, "itโsย a form of positive reinforcement designed to strengthen a specific behavioral response.ย Conditioning implies a lack of agency, whereas Iโm simply highlighting the natural, symbiotic relationship between your professional fulfillment and your... personal well-being."ย
Penelope lets out a sound that is dangerously close to a squeak, her hands flying to her mouth. JJ just leans back against a server rack, crossing her arms with an "I told you so" smirk that you would love to slap off her face.ย
You point at him slowly, horror creeping up your spine, as you accuse him. โYou were eavesdropping.โย
Spencer blinks once, an innocent smile creeping on his face. โI was walking to Garciaโs office.โย
โYou stopped.โย You narrow your eyes at him.ย
Spencer shrugs,ย โYes.โย
Penelope lowers her hands from her mouth. โFor how long, exactly?โย
Spencer thinks about it.ย Actually,ย thinksย about it.ย โLong enough to hear the part about the headboard.โย
You make a strangled noise.ย JJ presses her lips together again, her shoulders shaking.ย And you can practically hear Penelopeโs internal scream.ย โFantastic,โ you mutter, dropping back into the chair. โGreat. Wonderful.ย Iโmย thrilled.โย
Spencerย doesnโtย even have the grace to look embarrassed. Instead, he sets the stack of files down on Penelopeโs desk with a deliberate thud, his fingers lingering on the manila folders as he turns his full attention back to you. The fluorescent lights of the technicalย suiteย catch the amber in his eyes, making them look warmerโand far more calculatingย than usual.ย
โThe headboard comment was an interesting data point,โย he says, his voice dropping an octave.ย โThough, ifย weโreย being academically rigorous,ย I believe your exact wordsย wereย โsigning reinstatement papersโย onย said headboard. Which, from a legal standpoint, wouldย likely beย contested due to the... distracting nature of the environment.โย
โSpencer!โย you hiss, looking at JJ and Penelope, who are both vibrating with the kind of glee usually reserved for closing a serial killer's case file.ย
โI'm just saying,โย he continues, stepping closer untilย heโsย effectively boxed you into the ergonomic chair. He leans down, bracing one hand on the armrest and the other on the desk behind you. The scent of old books and his specific, clean soapย hitsย you likeย a physicalย weight.ย โIf the environment is the variable that's working, why fightย the science?โย
JJ clears her throat, picking up herย filesย and nudging a dazed Penelope.ย โOkay, I thinkย we'veย reached theย โtoo much informationโย threshold for a Wednesdayย evening. Penelope, don't you have those encryption keys to rotate?โย
โRotating! Yes! Rotating so fast!โย Penelope squeaks, grabbing her coffee mug andย power-walkingย out of her own office behind JJ.ย
The doorย doesn'tย even fully click shut before Spencerโs gaze intensifies. Heย doesn'tย move away. Instead, he reaches out, his long fingers tucking a stray lock of hair behind your ear. The touch is light, but it sends a familiar, treacherous spark straight to your core.ย โYou told them I'm weaponizing intimacy,โย he murmurs, his thumb tracing the shell of your ear.ย
โAren't you?โย you challenge, though your voice lacks the bite it had five minutes ago.ย โYou're trying toย Pavlovย me back into a bulletproof vest.โย
โIโm reminding you of who you are,โย he corrects softly. He shifts, his knee brushing against yours, and the proximity is suddenly overwhelming.ย โYouโreย a profiler. You see patterns where others see chaos. You crave the resolution of a complex puzzle.ย I'mย just ensuring that your physiological rewards are aligned with your intellectual strengths.โย He leans in closer, his breath warm against your cheek.ย โThink aboutย efficiency, like I said. No more debriefing over dinner. We can use that time for... other things.โย
You try to find your voice, yourย โcivilian lifeโย resolve crumbling like wet paper.ย โThis is unethical.ย Youโreย a doctor. You should know better.โย
โActually,โย he whispers, his lips hovering just a fraction of an inch from yours,ย โasย a doctor, Iโm highly concerned with your lack of adrenaline-induced endorphins.ย Itโsย a health intervention.โ You think heโs going to giveย inย thisย time, andย actually kiss you. But instead,ย he continues talking, his lips so close yet so far away,ย โAndย Iโmย not that kind of a doctor, darling.โย
The problem with Spencer Reid, one of many, reallyโis that he can say something deeply inappropriate in the same flat, academic tone he uses when discussing statistical anomalies. It makes arguing with himย nearly impossible; half your brain is busy being offended, while the other half is trying to process whetherย youโreย being seduced orย peer-reviewed.ย
Right now,ย itโsย a deeply unfair combination of both.ย
โYou are unbelievable,โ you manage, leaning back just enough to put a few inches of desperately needed oxygen between your faces.ย
Spencerย doesn'tย move. He just studies you with a quiet, clinical curiosity, likeย heโsย observingย the heat signature of a particularly volatile chemical reaction. โYou came to Quantico,โ he points out mildly.ย
โThatโs notโโ You exhale aย deep breath, frustrated, โThatโsย not the point.โย
โYou came to Garciaโs office,โ he continues, his voice dropping into that rhythmic, unstoppable cadence of a lecture. โWhichย is located inย the BAU wing. This suggests that, subconsciously, you still associate this environmentโand by extension, the people in itโwith safety and familiarity.โย
You know, deep down, thatย whatโsย heโsย telling is true, of course. Because when has Spencer Reid ever been wrong? But if he thinksย youโreย going to give him the satisfaction ofย being right,ย heโsย wrong. So, in a bored voice, you contend,ย โI came here specifically to complain about you, Spencer.โย
โStill counts as exposure therapy.โย
Your jaw drops. You search his eyes for a flicker of a joke, butย theyโreย wide and earnest.ย โDid you just turn my frustration into a clinical case study?โย
He tilts his head, a stray lock of hair falling over his brow. โStatistically? It was the most logical way to frame the interaction.โย
โIdeally,โ you start, โIโd like my boyfriend to stopย profilingย me.โ He tries to argue, but you stop him with a mere raise of your eyebrows. โyouย know exactly which buttons to push to get the results you want.ย Thatโsย profiling, Spencer.ย Youโreย profilingย me.โย
Heย doesn'tย deny it. Instead, he tilts his head, his nose grazing yours in a torturously slow movement. โIโm not profiling you," he murmurs, his voice vibrating withย a low, steady confidence. โIโm appreciatingย you.ย Thereโsย a significant difference in the neurobiological intent.โย
He lets his hand slide from the back of your chair to the nape of your neck, his fingers tangling in your hair. The pressure is just enough to keep you grounded, just enough to make you forget why you ever liked the idea of a quiet office job.ย
โIf I were profiling you," he continues, his lips brushing against the corner of your mouth as he speaks, โIโd mention that your pupils are currently dilated, your heart rate is likely exceeding 110 beats per minute, and youโve stopped mentioning the 'beauty of corporate consulting' entirely.โย
โI hate you,โ you whisper, thoughย youโreย already leaning into him, your hands findingย their placeย on the soft wool of his sweater. You also find you hate the fact that he can reduce you to thisโ a breathless, flustered, and entirely incapable of remembering why you were supposed to be angry in the first place.ย
โThe thin line between love and hate is often just a misinterpretation of high-arousal stimuli,โย Spencer retorts, finally closing the gap.ย
The kissย isn'tย the soft, gentle thing he usually offers in public.ย Itโsย possessive and intelligent, a physical manifestation of his refusal to let you settle for a life thatย doesn'tย challenge you, and completely unlike the Spencer Reid you know. It tastes like coffee andย victory. When he pulls back, just an inch, his eyes are dark with a playful sort of triumph.ย
โEmily's office is downย the corridor, up the stairs,โย he reminds you, his thumb smoothing over your lower lip.ย โSheโsย leaving for a meeting in ten minutes. If you sign the paperwork now,ย Iโllย take you to that Italian place with the dimly lit booths. We can discuss your... orientation.โย
He steps back, breakingย the physicalย contact and leaving you feeling suddenly, frustratingly cold. He picks up his messenger bag, slinging it over his shoulder with a casual grace that makes you want to scream.ย
โIโll be at my desk,โย he says, giving you one last, lingering look.ย โTiming is everything in a case, after all.โย
