A Gil fan??? That's actually pretty rare lolz. Why Gil? Not hating I'm actually asking
Y'know what I'm not exactly sure what initially prompted me to love Gil so much but I think it's largely the kind of archetypes he fills.
Y'know, Awkward Lanky Teen, Scaredy-Cat, Star-Crossed Lover/Romeo/Hopeless Romantic, Giant Pushover, etc.
And I think it was also an act of defiance against everyone else fucking hating his guts because like. SOMEBODY'S gotta be his biggest fan, right? Lol
And also because I can relate to both him being disabled and him growing up in a conservative household and working to get over the prejudice instilled in him by his parents. While my experiences are not the same as his, I think his character and character arc are very important for people, ESPECIALLY KIDS, to be able to relate to.
His character teaches two very important lessons of 'do what's right even when you're scared' and 'your parents do not always know what's best for you'. The fact that people completely disregard the point of his character EXISTING in lieu of calling him a racist just proves to me that they don't actually really care about the issues his character adresses.
And all things considered, his character is actually really well written in the sense that he reacts to and handles things very realistically for a teenager in his situation. HOWEVERRRRR AND THIS IS A BIG ASS HOWEVER, his character was INCREDIBLY POORLY HANDLED AND UTILIZED. And that is NOT GIL'S FAULT BECAUSE GIL DIDN'T WRITE THE GODDAMN PLOT, HIS CHARACTER IS A VICTIM OF MONSTER HIGH'S WRITING TEAM NOT KNOWING WTF TO DO WITH EITHER HIM OR LAGOONA. Anyways.
However because his character does have plenty of wasted potential, that allows me to have some creative liberties when I write him myself, and I've always found myself drawn to characters that I have room to play around with.
Also I'm sorry I'm GiLagoona's biggest fucking sucker and you can't have GiLagoona without Gil. Like ough fuck me the way he looks at her wehhhhh he loves her so damn much and I will throw bricks at anybody who dare says otherwise.
Also, and somehow this is a hot take, I actually REALLY like his design. Yes I fw the helmet yes I fw him having no ears yes I fw his pronounced cheekbones. I genuinely cannot understand why people insist that he's ugly. Like what nooo he's a cutie patootie!! He's also one of Monster High's more unique designs, especially for the boys, even if his outfit is lacking.
And finally, I actually like his personality. DESPITE WHAT PEOPLE WANT TO FUCKING TELL YOU, he's very sweet, gentle, kind-hearted, and generous, even if he doesn't always do the right thing. He's also very silly and I find his anxiousness endearing. And he actually has a real character flaw unlike most MH characters, and idk about you but I LOVE flawed characters. He's a chronic people-pleaser who's scared to upset anybody in his life due to trauma from his parents abuse and that tends to make him act spineless, selfish, and like he can somehow keep everybody happy by ignoring his problems. Which is, again, a very realistic flaw for him to have that doesn't make him inherently fucking evil. He also has a certain naivety to him that breaks my fucking heart because despite the horrible way his parents treat him he still loves them and still genuinely thinks they'll warm up to Lagoona eventually :( ough nooo Gil my shayla
Anyways I love Gil Webber he's my son and you are ALLOWED to dislike him, but ONLY if you actually bother taking the time to understand his character and you're not just spreading some bullshit about him being racist or manipulative or whatever when he's just a kid in a shitty situation where he's stuck between a rock and a hard place.
