. . mon oncle 1958 Jacques Tati . . https://www.instagram.com/p/CR4LvKrhHkp/?utm_medium=tumblr
Mon Oncle
My first foreign film! (Of the list, not in life.) Though honestly, the story of this film is mostly told brilliantly through gestures and sounds and music that very little dialogue was needed.
What I Liked:
The house that the Arpel’s live in is frankly absurd and I loved it. All of the rooms lead out into the garden which is the focal point of the house. And the crown jewel of the garden? A giant fish fountain. Every time someone came to visit the fountain had to be turned on to my endless amusement.
I think my favorite scene was the garden party. I could never tell exactly what the one lady was laughing at the entire time, but man does she make her own fun. The facial expressions of the neighbor lady we very strange. And everyone keeping to the stepping stones cracked me up.
I like the way the scene with Hulot climbing up to his room was filmed. The way that without moving the camera you can see his progressing up the stories and from one end of the building to the other.
I liked the little town and the quirky people in the little town. None of them appeared to have much, but they were a community, and they helped each other.
What I Disliked:
The ending was sad I thought. Out with the old, in with the new. No one has the time or patience for quirky. I’m not saying I dislike sad endings, or even this ending specifically, I just don’t think I was emotionally prepared for that to be where this journey took me. I’m a person who collects memories, and the idea of being faced with a sleek, spotless, modern existence is very depressing to me.
It was also just a tiny bit long.
Thoughts and Ponderings:
The dog and his pack were meant to mirror the son and his friends right? Or am I reading too much into that?
As much as I enjoyed that garden party, I would die if I actually had to attend it.
Kids are menaces.
