The 12th House: The Natural House of Pisces, Dissolution, Divine Wealth, and the Hidden Grace of Goddess Lakshmi
In Vedic astrology, the 12th house is often misunderstood. It is commonly reduced to ideas of loss, isolation, expense, or withdrawal. Yet this limited interpretation fails to capture the profound spiritual intelligence embedded within this bhāva. The 12th house is not merely about loss, it is about release. It is not about deprivation, it is about transcendence. As the natural house of Pisces, the 12th house represents the final stage of the soul’s journey through the material zodiac, where individuality dissolves back into the cosmic ocean from which it arose.

Who am I?
One evening, a son was sitting with his father.
Son: Dad, who am I really?
Father: Let's find out. What happened when you woke up this morning?
Son: I opened my eyes, saw my room, got out of bed and went about my day.
Father: There was a world around you—people, objects, sounds and sensations. And there was you, a person with a body, a name, memories and a life.
Son: Yes.
Father: Let's call that the waking world and the waking person.
Now, did you dream last night?
Son: Yes. I dreamed I was somewhere completely different.
Father: While you were dreaming, what happened to your waking world—your room, your family, your ordinary life?
Son: They disappeared.
Father: And what happened to the waking person you are right now?
The son thought for a moment.
Son: He disappeared too.
Father: Exactly.
The waking world disappeared, and the waking person disappeared with it.
Then a dream world appeared, and within that world a dream person appeared.
Son: But that dream person also felt like me.
Father: Exactly. While dreaming, you weren't normally thinking, “I'm actually lying in bed having a dream.”
You experienced yourself as the person inside the dream.
Son: That's true.
Father: So notice what happened:
When awake:
A waking world appeared, and a waking “me” appeared.
When dreaming:
The waking world and waking “me” disappeared. A dream world and a dream “me” appeared.
Son: That's strange. I always assumed the waking me was somehow there throughout.
Father: But look at your actual experience. When the dream was happening, the waking person wasn't present in your experience.
Now what happened when the dream ended and you entered deep sleep?
Son: Nothing. I didn't know anything.
Father: Was the waking world there?
Son: No.
Father: The waking person?
Son: No.
Father: The dream world?
Son: No.
Father: The dream person?
Son: No.
Father: Exactly.
In deep sleep, no world and no person are known. There are no distinct objects, thoughts or experiences.
The son remained quiet.
Then he asked:
Son: So who am I?
Father: That's the interesting question.
You normally believe:
“I am the waking person.”
But every night that person disappears and another person appears in a dream.
Then that person disappears too.
And in deep sleep, neither is known.
Then morning comes.
The waking world appears again.
The waking person appears again.
And immediately you say:
“This is me.”
The son thought about this.
Son: So the person I normally call “me” is something that appears and disappears?
Father: Yes.
Son: Then what doesn't change?
Father: Don't look for another person or another object.
Notice something much simpler.
Right now, you know that this conversation is happening.
There is awareness of your body, thoughts, sounds and the world.
In a dream, there is awareness of a completely different body and world.
And in deep sleep, no distinct object or world is known.
The contents of experience keep changing completely.
Son: So waking is one experience, dreaming is another, and deep sleep has no distinct experience.
Father: Yes.
Son: And you're saying I shouldn't define myself by any particular world or person that appears?
Father: Exactly.
The waking person comes and goes.
The dream person comes and goes.
Thoughts come and go.
Feelings come and go.
Entire worlds come and go.
So instead of asking only,
“What am I experiencing?”
ask the deeper question:
“What is it that knows experience?”
The son remained silent for a while.
Then he said:
Son: Awareness?
The father smiled.
Father: Awareness.
