pov: mobius to loki
Someone go add Loki to the queerbait Wikipedia
if i had a nickel for every time owen wilson played a character who had a fruity relationship with someone he went to pompeii with, i’d have two nickels. which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird it happened twice, right?
No because this whole narrative about it being 'on-brand' and 'in-character' for Loki to fall for himself in Sylvie (self-cest) because he's so "narcissistic" DOESN'T. MAKE. SENSE. And Mobius KNOWS this. He's just trying to understand why Loki betrayed him.
Loki used narcissism, ego and self-absorbedness as a MASK in New York. He always had. But we know that it was a mask because we've seen how broken Loki truly is deep down. He isn't proud of his actions in New York, we saw how upset and remorseful he was in episode one.
Loki isn't narcissistic, that's just a label that everyone has applied to him his entire life. Nobody saw passed the fact that he was brain-washed by Thanos because they thought that it was 'in-character' for Loki to want to dictate over Midgard. Not once did anyone question his actions. Loki was sending out a cry for help, he was tortured and brutalised and nobody heard him scream.
And THAT is why Loki is pulling that face when Mobius is ranting about him being so self-absorbed that he's fallen into some "demented attraction" for the female version of himself.
He's hurt because he thought Mobius knew him better than that. He thought Mobius saw through that mask.
And THAT is also why the line "you can be anyone you want to be, even someone good" is so important. Because that's Mobius telling Loki that he understands that he's pretending to be someone he isn't. He KNOWS that Loki is wearing this mask. And he's telling him that, no matter what anyone else says, he can be whoever he wants to be.
I appreciate that Loki tells Sif that he's a narcissist himself, and that may be valid a little, but he says it in such a defeated way. He appreciates that Sif would never listen to his reasonings behind why he did what he did to Thor, Sif and the Warrior Three. He was left out and picked on by the five of them. These acts were more like cries for attention. Those acts don't make you narcissistic - they make you desperate for validation. And Loki soon learned that the only validation he was going to get was validation in the form of accusations of him being a bad person. He had to watch Thor be praised for the exact same qualities that he was demonised for. That would mess anyone up.
Look at the way Loki looks at him once he realises he was right about Mobius seeing him for who he really is.
So no, I won't "ship" Loki and Sylvie together, and I won't accept that it is 'in-character' for Loki to fall in love with himself because it's NOT. Loki wants to be someone else. He wants to be good. He always has wanted to be good.
But he's been wearing this mask because he has HAD TO. And Mobius understands this and loves him.
