There are still places on public lands where amateur fossil hunters can easily discover the amazing remains of lifeβs past. Trilobites flourished during the Cambrian explosion, and because they had hard exoskeletons, their fossils are still easily found even 500 million years later. Science owes a great debt to these early arthropods as they provided evidence for the movement of continents, the radiation of species, geologic timelines, morphological studies, and many other fields. Pictured here is the head (cephalon) of a trilobite found in the Mojave Desert, which used to be covered by shallow seas.
