Name: Mogall

Debut: Fire Emblem Gaiden

I was thinking lately, I want to post about a creature from a game I haven’t even played. An entire franchise I haven’t even played. And it’s hard (though possible) to get more “I have never played this and do not intend to” than Fire Emblem! So here I am! Learning things on the Fire Emblem Wiki!

Perhaps you are as surprised as I was to learn that Fire Emblem can have an Awesome Creature in it! I think I was aware of the existence of dragons in Fire Emblem, but not much else, and I was delighted when I thought "surely there would be ONE Fire Emblem character I like” and found Mogall! The real star of the show! There are some other Monsters, but all pretty typical medieval fantasy stuff. Dragons and skeletons but not the funny kind, you know the deal. There are some giant spiders, though! That is pretty neat.

Mogall is one of my favorite kinds of fantasy monster, the kind that’s just sort of a wretched Thing, and it does a good job at that! All these eyes of varying sizes on this exposed musculature is pretty wretched indeed. The tendrils being specifically octopus arms is a lot more silly than wretched, but I love silly! You could tell yourself this is an octopus wearing a scary costume! Trick or Treat! Please choose Treat!

You know what’s a classic type of eyeball monster? The kind that’s just an eyeball with bat wings.

Well would you look at that! Eyeballs and bat wings! This concept art makes Mogall 100% more Goth! I prefer the design without the wings, but I am glad they visualized it at all. At this point it should not surprise you to learn they are Evil. They are given their life by Dark Power. They are as Evil as they come.

I think this sprite is funny. It is funny how when a creature’s face is all eye, any degree of eye closure becomes a full-blown facial expression! This Mogall looks like it is watching its opponent very intently in a chess match. Oh yeah, I forgot to say what Mogall actually does. It attacks with dark magic, of course, or by ramming its body into its enemies, and when it does physically attack, it is classified as Axe damage! I think they should communicate this by showing it take an axe out of nowhere, and attack with it, to be funny and silly.
