The warning for District 13 is more ambiguous in the book, and a lot of people refuse to believe Peeta’s words, but Haymitch stands up for him to Coin: “You don’t know him,” Haymitch says to Coin. “We do. Get your people ready.”

He follows Peeta’s recovery up close, and he is hopeful about every step he takes to come back to them. For him, a man who used to believe hope was as addictive as white liquor, "hope seems a lot like white liquor. It can fool you in the short run, but like as not, you’ll end up paying for it twice."—he interrupts his sobriety to trust in his boy.

"But it’s the first connection to you that hasn’t triggered some mental meltdown,” says Haymitch. “It’s something, at least, Katniss.”

"I don’t want to talk about Peeta. One of the best things about training is, it keeps me from thinking of him.” “Haymitch says he’s getting better,” she says."

He even stands up to Katniss to defend Peeta, even though he understands the pain she is going through and how that might be affecting her. He’s there to remind her that Peeta is not the one she should be punishing

"You do! You’re punishing him over and over for things that are out of his control."

He promised to get Peeta out alive, to make sure he made it out of the Games, and he is still fighting for that, for Peeta to find peace again and live a life worth living. He loves that boy. It’s that love that keeps him and Katniss together and it’s that love that brings them home.

“You and me, we made a deal to try and save him. Remember?” Haymitch says. When I don’t respond, he disconnects after a curt “Try and remember.”

“Because you have no wings to fly home with, I’ll bring the song back to you.

I’ll bring the song back to you”

The song itself has the energy of their relationship as well. It’s slow and her voice stays the same though the whole song. It captures sorrow and grief that I can associate with katniss and peeta. But it’s all more from katniss perspective. Her grief of the lost of peeta, or at least the peeta she knew.

And the lyrics is actually perfectly describes katniss grief with peeta. Her small moments of hope when she thinks he’s back to her. Like the moment when they are in the tunnels and he makes a joke. She thinks it sounds like he used to. But she knows he will never be the same. Neither will she be. “And I will try to see you, to feel you, to free you”.

Additionally, the symbolic that Katniss is the mockingjay and peetas comment that mockingjays needs their winds, can also perfectly be parallel to the lyrics “if you have no wings to fly home with”. Peeta cannot run, he cannot hide. He’s been caught by snow and tortured and hijacked. He’s no bird that can just fly away. He’s stuck in every way possible. While katniss has the ability to somehow always slip away.

Along with that, the lyrics “I’ll bring the song back to you” can be interpreted in so many different ways when it comes to peeta and karniss, that she will always be there. Even when peeta is actively trying to kill her, she still has some hope and love that he will make it through. She still try to connect with him, even when he makes it hard. She tried to sympathize and relate to him. Help him figure things out. She is his rock as he is hers. She humanizes him when everyone sees him as a monster. She can see past the mutt and the hijacking.

Even without trying or knowing, she brings out peeta when he’s hijacked. Even though the capital had made sure that he would be terrified of her, hate her. She still grounded him. Thanks to her, he had the motivation and will to fight the hijacking, even while it’s actively working. Like one more in the tunnels. When they hear the mutts, and she believes he’s going to attack her but no. He warns her to run. To get away.

Another thing that I like to say, is the part when peeta hears katniss fathers song. A memory. The first thing that is associated with her that doesn’t make him panic. And it’s her father, and by extension. Her. After all, she had been gifted her father’s beautiful voice.

I just babbled, so if something doesn’t make sense. Don’t blame me. I just been listening to this song over and over again. It genuinely has made me look at everlarks relationship differently, and katniss grief. But I definitely just talked out of my ass so 😭

And that’s a definite improvement over his situation twelve hours ago. Let’s keep that in mind, all right?”~Plutarch Heavensbee, Mockingjay, Chapter 13.

Katniss then said that Plutarch’s attempt to cheer her up had come laced with the news of four, possibly five murders.  But what if Plutarch meant they had Effie with them, but no idea what had happened? It’s said that she and the rest of the Games staff who weren’t Gamemakers were sent home. There is a good chance that Effie, like Cinna, was taken on the eve of the Quell. So by that idea, then Haymitch and his fellow rebels in the Capitol would have had a chance to retrieve her before too much irreversible damage could be done and have her transferred to District Thirteen’s hospital.

Now, Effie wouldn’t be used to pain and interrogation, so she would be understandably traumatised from it, not to mention a fair bit beaten and unwelcome in Thirteen as a Capitol citizen and an escort. She may have been mute with trauma and as Coin hated Capitol citizens, especially those she hadn’t thoroughly vetted (Plutarch, Fulvia, Cressida, etc., etc.,), Effie would have been among those she’d wanted to execute, leading to Haymitch and Plutarch having to fight tooth and nail for her. 

I think after Prim believed her sister was dead, she did her hair in Katniss’ signature braid and decided to try and finish the war that was caused by her sister’s protection and love for her.

I think she was inspired by Katniss’ bravery, and as an act of love decided to volunteer to work in the field in honour of her sister.
