so ruth (it/they) (but also very closeted about it) took the job at 16 (lied about their age) as a necessary escape attempt from their abusive family not knowing that canary cargo was going to be just as if not more controlling. whilst they know that they would not have survived back where they were from it still longs to be free- something that it is currently not under the means of an overtly demanding company in space!!!
meanwhile their whole deal with captain is that they are actively being suffocated by captain’s attempts at “integrating them with the family” through constantly breaking them down to fit a single-directed role. though they may be brash and act out at these attempts, they do find themselves slowly being lead forward into a cloying haze because they too yearn for a “family situation” to put themselves with/continue the normalcy of having their own autonomy denied though they had left a bad situation in the first place for the very reason.
because of this, jim co-pilot both looks down upon and relates to ruth, which makes their relationship strained
they are closer with nurse. maybe. this may be further elaborated on
doodle on the right is what it looks like after the crash- not pictured but it does lose like. an arm. whilst not as severe as some other patients it does need a bit more tending to especially as a chunk of their face was blown off. ouch.
