Song Review: Mavis Staples - âWorthyâ
âWorthyâ doesnât sound like a Mavis Staples song, though it is exactly that.
And itâs not just the funk-cum-hip-hop beats. Staplesâ voice has been manipulated and smoothed in the studio to the point that the leathery, world-weary sound of her instrument is barely recognizable as she sings:
Look at you smilinâ, shininâ/beaminâ like the sunshine/risinâ climbinâ/grindinâ through the hard times/growinâ, showinâ/up like youâre a star/âcause no matter where you stand today/I hope you know you are/hope you know youâre/worthy
Sound Bites supposed the songwriters and producer MNDR thought they were doing Staples a favor by putting their handiwork all over âWorthy.â But Staples is plenty worthy as her true self and doesnât benefit from this botched sonic facelift.
