National cycling coach blasts federation for foul-up
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 5, 2015:
National cycling coach John Beasley has lambasted the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) for jeopardising the sport in order to make money.
The Australian made the claim after becomingĀ furious over mistreatment of his cyclists and himself following their departure from Melbourne to Bangkok, Thailand.
Beasley and the team are currently inĀ Korat, Thailand, for the Asian Cycling Championship that will be held from Feb 4 to 15.
Speaking to The Rakyat Post, Beasley said it started when the team was left stranded in Melbourne because the flight tickets to Bangkok was not purchased.
āI was told that the National Sports Council (MSN) had paid the money for the tickets and accommodation to the federation.
āI have had a long history dealing with Aizad Othman, the guy entrusted to organise everything.
āAll he had to do was pay for it as we had organised everything and provided all the details to him. Even that he couldnāt do.ā
Beasley went on to explain that when he got to the ticket counter atĀ the Melbourne airport, two hours after standing in a queue, he was told that he and his team were not in the system.
He added that while the bookings were made, it was never paid for.
Beasley then rang Aizad, but was forced to leave him a message because he did not answer the phone call.
Instead, Aizad called Azizulhasni Awang, but Beasley said he picked up the phone and gave Aizad āa piece of his mindā.
He said the team was due to fly at 12.30pm but only received their e-tickets at 11.40pm.
Beasley went on to praise the cyclists, who he said behaved as professionals throughout the whole ordeal, despite ābeing shafted by their own federationā.
āNobody should be treated like this, especially your high achievers.ā
When asked if Beasley made an official complain about the incident, he wondered to whom he could complain to.
āI am sorry, I have lost all respect for a lot of the people running the federation, they really do not seem to care about cycling one little bit, unless there is money to be made from it.
āThese people have no development plans and no programmes which is why road cycling is where it is. They do not know anything about high performance sport.
āI do not care if IĀ look like the bad guy here because all I care about is the athleteās welfare, development, and to implement a successful model in which Malaysia can continue to become very successful in track cycling.ā
He said he did not expect much from the Youth and Sports Ministry, as they already had much on their plate.
The federation, Beasley said, should be held accountable for lack of development, and MSN as well asĀ the National Sports Institute (ISN) wereĀ at the apexĀ of a pyramid.
āBut how do you get to the top of a pyramid which has no base?ā
BeasleyĀ said he had produced āplan after planā for the federation, but nothing was followed through.
āMillions go through the federation each year and the only thing they had produced are fat pockets.
āThey do not care about the sport we love and itās time to clean up this sport. The ministry is trying its best, but this is a massive task.
āI just hope they can hold these people accountable for the money they are given.ā

Khairy: MNCF leadership needs to go if audit issue not settled
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 13:
The Malaysian National CyclingĀ Federationās leadership must go if there is no resolution on the issue of its financial audit, said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
He said MNCF whose registration was suspended a month from Oct 24, must holdĀ an annual general meeting and polls to elect a new leadership line up if aĀ solution is not in sight.
āThey have to submit an appeal. Suspension is under the jurisdiction of theĀ Sports Comissioner while the minister has the power to hear the appeal,ā said Khairy.
The governing body for cycling sports in the country was handed theĀ suspension after an audit by the ministryās Internal Audit Unit foundĀ irregularities in its financial management.
Meanwhile, MNCF deputy president Datuk Naim Mohamad said its executiveĀ committee would be meeting this week to come up with a reply to the SportsĀ Commissionerās queries on its affairs.
