growing up as a native kid there is little to no representation of our peoples and culture, and the little we do have is often directly or associated with harmful stereotypes. despite this, many natives still feel connected to these characters from our childhood and the bits of representation they had for us. this term is for those who would like to reclaim that character from those hurtful stereotypes while appreciating connection and representation one may have with them, particularly in the way one sees themselves through expressions of gender or self

little strongheart is a buffalo from my little pony friendship is magic, or mlp gen 4. she is primarily featured in the episode ‘over a barrel’ in which there is a land dispute between her nation and ponies. she harbors many harmful stereotypes about american native peoples, including her headdress, way of speaking, and ‘noble savage’ archetype. however, many young natives saw a fierce girl who fought for her people and for peace, and saw themselves in her character
