It's so nice to see a side gay couple in a non-BL series, especially with a chubby character (and the fact that Madaraito was the chubby one before is kinda sweet ngl)
I mean, as a chubby gay man, it's really cool to feel represented in media. Even in BL stories it's rare to see chubby characters, so seeing a couple like that casually existing in hetero romance series feels really refreshing!
Something I love about Heated Rivalry is that it's not a choice is a theme but not in a respectability politics "homophobia is wrong because it's not a choice" way.

I’m a sucker for romance stories, whether they be queer or conformant. However one thing that ALWAYS bothers me, is when I find a MLM story and I start reading it only for it to romanticize sexual assault and/or themes of rape. I understand this isn’t exclusive to MLM but I run into it upsettingly more often in MLM stories than in conformant or other stories for some reason. It just sucks when I’m reading a new story and it becomes predatory instantly. I’m tired of these men being objectified, and these CLEARLY predatory situations being romanticized and seen as fine.
This is homoandrophobia and toxic masculinity.
Its terrifyingly common for people to tell achillean men to stay in abusive relationships, or to fetishize the abuse that achillean men are going through.
Dark romances are one thing, but if you're advertising a story as a cute gay love story rather than a dark romance, then have these themes of rape and abuse normalized, you're telling people (especially achillean men) that abuse should be tolerated or even celebrated when seen in MLM relationships.

You know what’s more frustrating about all this Byler shit? That you don’t even have to have a same-sex ship be confirmed as canon in the text for it to be validated as a same-sex ship. The only possible answer is that the Duffers got cold feet and never fully went there with it or had any kind of resolution for it because they don’t want to be hit by both sides of the political climate and that’s just cowardice. A fast-paced and thrilling read!
I went into this expecting a paranormal mystery story, about solving the mystery of Max's death, as well as the subsequent paranormal/ghostly goings-on, but it turned out to be a much more straightforward plot focusing on the characters' interpersonal relationships.
While the general story arc is focused on the character relationships, there's still a lot happening, and the tight pacing makes the book unputdownable. (Seriously, I finished it in a day.) The author does an excellent job of portraying and developing the dynamics of all the different relationships even with everything going on, and in such a (relatively) short book.
I found both protagonists to be sympathetic and relatable. It's easy to understand where they are coming from, even when they mess up. Max is trying to remember his family and learn what they know about his death, and Joaquin has to reconnect with his ex-boyfriend, while both of them are figuring out their relationships with their brothers.
I also love the relationship that develops between them. Even though they only just meet, Joaquin is immediately determined to help Max, and they quickly form a bond that is not necessarily romantic, but still profound and important.
While the paranormal elements were less of a plot point than I expected, what we do get of the worldbuilding was fun. There was some classic ghosts-causing-lights-to-flicker activity, as well as good old ghosts-are-actually-everywhere-and-we-look-right-past-them bits. No spoilers, but there were some really cool bits where Max uses his ghostly abilities to interact with tech that were lots of fun. I would have liked to spend more time learning about Ghost Lore, but for what we get, it's enough.
