I do not know if growing up you heard the word in Spanish, "mitote", used. The word was a Coahuiltecan word that meant "dance" or "party". The Coahuiltecan Native Tribe members in our area would get together at night and hold "mitotes". They would dance and drink mescal and partake of peyote during these mitotes. The word was adapted by the Spanish settlers here to mean "a dance party" with food and drink. It is interesting that the Aztecs and the Toltecs used the word as well, although the meaning varied. This fact gives credence to the thinking that the Coahuiltecan tribes had contact with the tribes to the south.
