Hey anyone who reads this!! I know English and another language fluently, I've studied to learn 3 other languages in the last 6 years and more. So trust me when I say MISTRANSLATIONS OCCUR.
MISTRANSLATIONS REGARDING TONE OCCUR TOO!! 4 languages I know have tone built in depending on spelling! So when translating to English you may lose that tone if the word itself doesn't change!!
I really, really, really, hate when people take something that obviously has more to it and use that as a way to prove a point, NO!
Also, if you're using something such as Google translate when you're translating a language you don't know to English, And when I mean don't know I don't mean like I don't know Spanish so Im translating Spanish to English, I mean I don't recognize it, MISTRANSLATIONS CAN OCCUR!! Especially with Google translate. As well as the fact languages may be similar in spelling but not in meaning.
Recently I took the language I know by heart, but cannot write (it's usually written how you pronounce it so it varies if you're not using the symbols) and I used a basic term that I cannot forget, do you know what "may I have water?" Translated into?? I don't remember if that well since I was in school but something along the lines of, my darling may I have sex or something smutty.
While I know my example doesn't make sense when translating manwhas since you know the language and stuff, it works on a general basis!! There are many jokes about this online too!! So please don't assume the translation is always true
Recently I was also discussing a scene in a webtoon I really like and someone commented on a dialogue which was odd, I stated it could be a mistranslation and they said no, I took a look at the source and while I thought it was it always could change since I don't know the language, they said that couldn't be the case since mistranslation cannot occur, the translated name makes "lord" king and "dark" demon, and the chapter after that a female character was called he because if was on early publishing!! Please!! Do!! Your!! Research!!
