YES TO ALL OF THAT. I actually love that it wasn’t there and they didn’t make a thing of it because it meant Roxy wasn’t relegated to love interest. But I like to think they’ll develop a partnership and it’ll happen slowly. I have lots of Roxy feels.

I also absolutely LOVED that they didn't make any sort of plot point of her being the 'last girl standing' (for lack of a better phrase ugh and also because Amelia was the first to fall) because she was treated as an equal by her superiors and by her fellow recruits (and then of course for her to earn that place as Lancelot and not just ~win by default of Eggsy failing was even better)

Some American spellings look wrong to me like center and gray and theater but the s/z thing doesn’t bother me because I only learned recently it was a BE/AE difference. Before, I thought I could use both randomly haha!

As a linguistics graduate and EFL teacher I think I’ve ended up hyper-aware of spelling differences, so I still notice when it’s American spelling but it doesn’t look wrong to me. I do think Brits are more aware of US English than vice versa.

Same, basically. I'm very aware of differences (and often prod American friends for more info when I spot new ones) but they don't actually look wrong.

Yay for being tagged! I don’t think I’ve ever written a fic entirely set in the US but I reckon I’d do the same as you. I give Cora American vocab for instance but I don’t give her American spelling. I wouldn’t expect American authors to use British spelling either. I don’t really notice tbh unless its my students writing ‘theater’ instead of ‘theatre’. :P

I'm writing a Marvel-based fic, which naturally means that most of my characters are American, or at least speak American English.

My question to you is: as an English writer, should I be using American spelling?

See, my instinctive answer was no. I'm not American, I'm not pretending to be American, I'm just acknowledging that my characters are. So I'll say 'apartment' instead of 'flat', because that's part of my characters' vocabulary, but I still feel like writing 'analyze' rather than 'analyse' is kind of superfluous. Maybe it's because I've spent three years being told to ignore orthography (linguistics ftw!) but I really don't feel like it's necessary to change it. (Also, it's inconvenient for me!)

And yet I'm informed that if American writers are writing British settings, it's a convention that they'll try for British spellings.
