Personal post: I went from the age 21 to the age 25 never looking in the mirror. I liked the ideal body I had in my mind, and that would not match up with the body I had on the outside. So for almost 5 years I wouldn't look up when I washed my hands, or passed by on my way out of the shower... I only ever saw my face from tiny compact mirrors when I put on make up, and I would only glance quickly to make sure my outfit wasn't completely ridiculous. Those glances often left me sad. Flash forward to ten years later. I am further away from that ideal body I have always felt was truly mine in my mind, but I also can look at myself in the mirror and love myself. Because your body/weight is the least interesting thing about you. It's what you do with your body (dance, swim, grow a child, travel, comfort friends, hold lovers) that matters, it's who you are and your intelligent mind and genuine intentions that shine from your eyes and your beautiful smile that captivates people. When I stopped looking at the mirror with a critical mind, and instead a loving mind, I finally saw what people meant when they said I had bright kind eyes or a lovely smile. I also started to love the me that matters, which makes me want to take care of this body that carries around the me that matters. Interesting thing, I don't have an ideal body in my mind anymore. Just a wish for a healthy one. A lot less intimidating. Do not fear the mirror. It isn't your enemy. Just look deeper than your reflection, and love the you that matters.
