it was tricky to ask for his roommate to leave the house for most of the night. not only because they rarely got in each other’s way as it was, not to mention avoiding the questions or having to explain himself. but there’s levels to it. the simple fact that he has to think to himself why he wanted it alone in the first place. when it would suffice to spend the time with both women, who were friendly to his knowledge. why he had needed it to be just him and minjung. there’s no way to explain (no good way) no way to make sense of it all. it would mean unpackaging the weight of guilt that had been retrogressing inside of him. why it mattered at all was too much to acknowledge.
he organizes himself into a comfortable space next to minjung. it was quieter without charlie to be here raising the spirits. with just himself and minjung, it relied heavily on the both of them. which meant, it relied heavily on her. he found himself feeling reserved, content to just kick back and watch her, drinking and earned relaxation. the years they had become so functional, hardly an effort required to be happy together. when was the last time he could be happy with just her, without their mutual friends around (jaehwa comes to mind, an image that he can feel judging his intention. perhaps it’s the guilt that makes him imagine it) he tries to bring his focus back to her, leaning back into the couch cushions and uncrossing his ankle to stretch out. “i can’t help but feel like, even though it’s nearly your birthday, it’s me who’s getting the gift.” he teases, “since we haven’t been alone in so long i hardly remember what it’s like to talk to you. other than to watch your back headed for the door.”
minjung and her laugh, her smile, it always sounded different when they were alone. her company felt different with only two. “we’ve been friends for so long, haven’t we?” he can’t help himself. like the moon, she always rises in his life when it grows dark. he thinks of her as a leading light. not that she brightens the sky, but just that she’s distinguishable as the one thing he can take notice of among the black. “since you’ve grown busy,” (and other things, their shared connection to jaehwa being the most prominent thought, but he pretend otherwise) “-well,” he realizes that he sounds too sentimental and stops himself with a smirk. “it’s just a miracle we haven’t drove each other crazy by now.” he ends it, maybe mercifully (for himself, and his growing embarrassment)
