I saw this Minghwa moment in a compilation and I had to clip it to have to hand forever.
Seonghwa's face 😂😂
This clip made a return to my timeline and I think it's one of my favorite MinHwa interactions from recent memory. Mingi's just come back from one of his side quests (I think a gallery or fashion brand opening?) and he's all dolled-up. Seonghwa has been chilling with atiny and Mingi stops by to say hello.
Mingi, doing a bit like he stumbled on Seonghwa's live and is acting surprised: "Seonghwa-hyung I missed you! Ah, you were doing a live~?"
Seonghwa: "Why are you being so awkward? Where are you coming from?"
Mingi: "Well, just this and that - an event. Hello!"
Seonghwa: "You have hair and makeup done, I see... You look pretty"
Mingi, exaggerating and speaking in English for atiny: "Ah, that's me everyday, right?"
Seonghwa, deadpan: "That's not it"
Mingi: "I'm going~ I'm very tired"
I mentioned in another post that one of the things that compels me about the MinHwa relationship is that they are not sweet with each other. They don't need that from the other. In a strange way, I think Mingi gives Seonghwa permission to be catty and petty and a touch cruel (in a way you can only be with family) because Seonghwa knows Mingi can shake it off. Mingi has his own insecurities and anxieties but they are not necessarily inflamed by any kind of competition with Seonghwa. Seonghwa is competitive with other members for certain things (I just watched their production behind for IOMT and he is not pleased to have lost out on the lines he wanted in the audition process), but not necessarily with Mingi, who plays a very different role on the team. I also don't think Seonghwa can dominate Mingi the way he can dominate the others; he cannot be governed by the subtle "mothering" techniques he employs on the rest of the 99' line.
I shouldn't say that they never compete with each other: whereas Yunho made reference to Mingi's "chocolate" (abs) for his Calvin Klein campaign, Seonghwa divulged that Mingi was having a tough time preparing for his shoot -- but then he redirected attention to his own forthcoming magazine spread.
I think there's an interesting identification happening, actually. Mingi has very clear goals and ideas of what he wants as an artist and shamelessly pursues them, even when that puts him at odds with the idol persona. Seonghwa too has his own agenda, but finds ways to mold his idol persona around those aspirations so they appear seamlessly integrated into his character lore. They both have extremely high standards for themselves and their art. Seonghwa has confessed in the past to being really hard on himself for not meeting his own standards, contributing to a lot of his issues with self-esteem. Meanwhile, Mingi has always held a rigid idea of what success looked like for himself and their group and has grappled with the harsh realities of the music industry, both domestic and international.
They both have striking visuals that are considered non-traditional for kpop idols yet has opened doors for them in the world of high fashion model editorials. They are both savvy self-promoters and networkers who have forged partnerships and collaborations without KQ's help.
I think they are so similar that it makes them incompatible (not to refer again to the fortune teller episode), but that's where I find their tension so interesting. They would not be friends if it wasn't for Ateez, but they clearly have worked hard to understand each other.
