Class in Session
Wilkerson: The Pythagorean Theorem states for any given right-angle triangle, the square of the length of the longest side, the “hypotenuse” is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. In other words:Â
a2 + b2 = c2.Â
Using this formula, we can calculate the length of any side of the triangle when given the length of the remaining two sides.
Wilkerson: Let’s take this example where a = 4 and c = 5, what is the length of side b?Â
Does anyone have an answer? Come on, this is an easy one. Yes, I can see your hand, Miss Johnson. But perhaps we should let someone else answer for a change? Care to enlighten us, Mr.Diaz?
Daniel:Â
A: Uh... Three?
B: 42.Â
C: The circumference of your bald head!Â
A:Â
Wilkerson: Well, I suppose even a broken clock is right twice a day. Let’s move on.
B:Â
Wilkerson: I would applaud you for the attempt, were it not so wildly inaccurate.
C:Â
Class: (laughs)
Wilkerson: Yes, keep telling your little jokes. Perhaps someday when you’re doing stand-up in a dive bar, impoverished, and living a life of abject failure, you’ll finally understand the importance of the knowledge I tried to instill in you.
Daniel: Comedians make millions doing what they do, how much do you make, Mr.Wilkerson?
Class: Ooooooooooooh.
Wilkerson: Mr.Diaz, need I remind you that I am the one in charge here. You do not speak unless spoken to, or do I need to have another chat with your grandmother? I’m sure she’d be happy to learn of her grandson’s miscreant behavior.
Daniel: …
Wilkerson: I didn’t think so. Moving on…
