"OUR MILKY WAY MAY HAVE STOLEN STARS FROM OTHER GALAXIES"
According to a new study released by two astronomers from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, approximately half of the stars that orbit the extreme outer edge of the Milky Way actually belonged to the nearby Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. In the study, the Sagittarius Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy is though to be the origin of the stolen stars. This is thought to be one of the closest galaxies to our own. Over time, this galaxy would have orbited the Milky Way several times in the past. With each passing orbit, the galaxy would have been slowly affected more and more by our Milky Way's strong gravity, causing Sagittarius to break apart. Looking more closely at the eleven farthest stars in our galaxy located about 300,000 light-years from Earth (that are well beyond the actual spirals of our galaxy). this gravitational influence effect can be seen more clearly with streams of stars stretching away from the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy towards the centre of our galaxy. Through computer simulations, it was shown that over time, Sagittarius dwarf should have lost about one-third of its original stars and nine-tenths of its dark matter to the Milky Way. This would have created three distinct streams of stars that reach one million lightyears from the core of our galaxy to the very fringes of the Milky Way. Most promising about this is that one of these streams was already predicted by simulations conducted by other projects such as the Sloan Digital Survey.
