Disclaimer: This is NOT trying to dissuade criticism of RWBY but to address patterns in said criticism. Believe it or not, criticism isn’t above criticism.
This is something I have heard lobbied against them way back in the Pre-V2 days onwards and I never got this whole attempt at a “Gotcha” when… we all knew. Rooster Teeth was new to proper animation then and weren’t exactly an entertainment industry juggernauts.
Monty, Miles and Kerry not being professional writers was even part of RWBY’s charm where it was a passion project clearly on a budget. They knew they were amateurs and learning on the job, humble enough to know as much.
In fact, this is something most indie animation is known and beloved for today. Some of them being less than polished like Please Don’t Make Me A Magical Girl or other pilots that are largely animatics set to spiffy voice acting.
Again, this is NOT trying to dissuade criticism of RWBY and might not apply to today with how it’s not the early 2010s anymore.
It’s more like me looking back at old discourse and thinking, “Yeah, they aren’t pros who have thirty years of experience in this field. So? We all had to start somewhere.”
