The man almost escapes, of course, as a product of Mildred’s own meddling, until Mildred found a way to blackmail him. Her brother had loved Dolly, after all. So she had told him leaving her to wait for him alone was a crime, a crime on top of so many others he had already committed. So he agreed. Mildred’s night terrors don’t stop, not completely, not at first, but as time passes where she now lives with Gwendolyn, she begins to heal as much as the woman she loves, finding peace in Gwendolyn and her gentleness. The need for blackmail is, at last, over.
