Friday, June 26: King Diamond, "The Possession"
R.I.P. Timi Hansen (1958-2019)
Abigail wasnโt that far removed from Fatal Portrait on a musical level, but King Diamondโs second record was where the whole idea behind the band snapped into focus.ย Whether one followed the narratives the lyrics and vocals meshed seamlessly with the tech/goth/thrash hybrid that Andy LaRocque, Michael Denner, Timi Hansen and the irrepressible Mikkey Dee cranked out in lockstep, making tracks like โThe Possessionโ work as both a link in the storyline and slamming standalone headbanger.ย One mightโve expected the tune to sound more like Mercyful Fate given it was written by Michael Denner and King Diamond, but it was of a piece with the blockier and shreddier sound the group was fully harnessing on Abigail.ย At their best the group was both an irresistible force and immovable object, with the musicians charging with a certain inevitability while Kingโs singular vocals were a special effect but also its own instrument that kept the music and concepts moving.ย

We got the news this morning, and itโs so extremely sad, about the sudden passing of my brother and dear friend, Phil Campbell.
โHe was the funniest guy I have ever known and the best rock guitar player I have ever played with. His vibe and feel for rock music were outstanding. We wrote 12 studio albums together, and he never stopped surprising me with his extreme talent. Most of all, I will miss hanging out with the nicest guy you could ever meet.
โMy family and I send our thoughts to Philโs family. I truly wish them all the best for the future, and I will be right here if they ever need anything.
โSleep well, my friend and rock soldier. Say hi to Lemmy, Wรผrzel, Filthy and Eddie. I am sure youโll be a crazy gang hanging out together again!
