Slowly she strokes a finger over his cheek, the short nail simply tracing the lines that make his face the map that she knows better than any of the planet that she currently inhabits. It's so rare that her human sleeps longer than she does, she's always kind of glad when he does because it means that she can check on him and make sure that he's not working himself too hard. Despite her supernatural status he still insists on keeping himself awake and checking on her throughout the night, he who deserves his peace and his rest so much more than she does. The lonely solider, who battles his way through his oceans of guilt and self hatred when half of the things that he takes the weight of are her own mistakes.
She thinks sometimes that he doesn't know how much she loves him, because she isn't as good with words as he is and isn't always as on top of her emotions as she could be if she had always lived on earth. Inside herself she makes love confessions like those ones she's watched, but usually she simply chooses to gasp out an incredulous 'I love you' but really there is so much depth to not only her love for him but also her gratitude to him for giving her the human life that she had always wanted so very much. Her pale fingers rub a little through his beard and she watches him move his lips a little in his sleep, a tiny smile passing over her lips.
She's in love with his humanity, he hates to think that he is insignificant and unnoticed but she knows that humanity is an admirable quality. His very basic kind of kindness and loyalty that she just doesn't possess, angels always considered themselves more advanced from humans due to their cold mannerisms but Virtue believes that the human instinct to protect and care for one another is a better state of being. Angelic detachment for one another has caused the wars in heaven just as passion has caused ones on earth. The redhead would much rather fight a war for love of Mikael than she would for power in heaven. She'd happily hang up her wings to protect their family.Â
She straights his dark curls next, smoothing them off of his handsome face. Angels would fall for that face she thinks with a smile, I would. She imagines how their story will be told, maybe as a cautionary tale to fledglings about the perils of falling in love with a human. But more likely as a deeply romanticised tale of a girl who loved a man more than she loved power. The old story, the one that she in turn fell in love with when she had looked down on the earth like her own personal snow globe. Her dreams were childish of course, a girl from the start of time who believed that happiness lay in her finding a handsome Prince to take her off on a white horse. Mikael however simply melted her skin like that little layer of ice that's on the top of ice cream when you get it out of the freezer. The way he worried after her despite her impenetrable skin and vast power. Truthfully she'd rather have her powers than not, then it made it so much easier for her to protect him.Â
As he often does for her she rearranges his blankets tucking him in resisting the temptation to reach down and stroke her hand over his chest the way she so often does. She doesn't want to break him out of his sleep and unsettle him, so instead she continues her gentle stroking of his hair. He seems soothed by it which only increases her smile, he looks so much younger in his sleep when so often he looks so much older. Haunted, as he once haunted the murder house. He's more a victim than she knows he will ever admit, yes there are faults. Laziness, a lack of desire to connect, but she knows he's capable. Capable of so much more than he will ever accomplish, he will never have the motivation. That chance was lost before it even begun.
She loves him for everything that he is, and even the things that he could have been because she appreciates the success he could have enjoyed. She knows his worth even if he refuses too. With a final kiss pressed to his forehead she leans back. Nuzzling against his side and feeling his warmth, the warmth that he claims to lack. He claims to lack so much that he has, maybe she thinks so that he won't be expected to show those qualities. But she see's them. She see's him.
