Mike Oldfield “Tubular Bells” LP. Somehow I managed to keep this album out of my personal collection till I bought a small collection a few years ago that had this half speed master in it. It’s not worth much and I like instrumental music so I’m probably keeping it, if nothing more, for a Halloween album. While I can’t speak for other regions, in Northeast Ohio thrifts and used record shops 20 years ago this was like the rock and roll equivalent to “Whipped Cream and Other Delights” insofar as its omnipresence. Fun fact: I have never listened to this record until today nor have I ever seen The Exorcist, though maybe I’ll watch it tonight? #LP #Vinyl #Records #MikeOldfield #TubularBells #HalfSpeedMastered #AudiophilePressing #TheExorcist #SpookyTunes https://www.instagram.com/p/Cjtho3AuESY/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Gotta love Tubular Bells, the 1971 album-length instrumental by Mike Oldfield. A teenaged musical genius, this was his debut album, released by a small independent record store that wanted to start a label: Virgin Records. That first release sold more than 16 million copies, so there’s no Richard Branson without the insane runaway success of Tubular Bells. Adding to its pop culture luster is the fact that the opening segment became the theme to 1973’s The Exorcist, which surely helped sell more copies over the decades. This is a vintage picture disc from the 1970s; it looks and sounds awesome spinning on the vertical turntable
The Exorcist 1973, Mile Oldfield & Jack Nitzsche. Played for Max Von Sydow who was a fine Actor.

Back in the 70s everyone’s collection seemed to include Mike Oldfield’s most well-known album, “Tubular Bells”. This album from 1982 is very, very different from that one, but became his next-best-selling collection. Side one is the 24+ minute long “Taurus II”, a prog-folk masterpiece that changes tempo, focus and instrumentation countless times. Side 2 wraps up with Oldfield’s biggest radio hit, the title cut, which features Maggie Reilly on vocals, as well as Oldfield himself, singing through a vocoder. The biggest revelation I had while spinning this album centres around the first song on side 2, though. I had totally forgotten that “Family Man”, the song for which Hall and Oates are most known for, was originally done by Oldfield, its songwriter. Amazingly enough, Darryl and John also released their hit single version the same year, 1982. Check out the inside of the gatefold cover, with the tracking information from the title cut. It looks a lot like what you might see today from digital recording and editing software. #Prog #Folk #MikeOldfield #HallAndOates #1982 #vinyl #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #album #albumart #albumcollection #albumcollector #record #recordcollection #recordcollector #vinylrecords https://www.instagram.com/p/BnxLy3EnOx5/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=uq0ymq9orjfk
