The sun was burning his skin more than Kendall thought it would and spending the afternoon reading Tolstoy naked in the rushes with Farley, Vennie, and Felix had only made it worse. He could have pretended to have a heat stroke so that he could avoid this stultifying tea with the family matriarch, but he knew better than that. The Cattons were old friends of Mom’s and there would have been hell for him to pay if he had shirked his duty.
So, he sat on the cane chair next to this extraordinarily beautiful woman and looked out towards the maze in front of them. From this vantage point the entrance and exit seemed to be very clear, but Kendall couldn’t be sure of what it would be like on the ground. Perhaps, he would get lost somewhere in there and would never come out. God knows, these people liked to play tricks with each other.
“Has anyone died walking through that maze?” Kendall asked Elspeth not knowing whether there was anything else he could ask. “Or, like, do people always find their way to the other side?”
