@univer-underfell Recognize the cameos? :)
_ New Logbook Begun _ User: Marshall R. Ebott _ Logbook Name: U.S.O-08 (Migosp/Migospel) _ Logbook Type: Written _ First Updated: 4/25/2123 _ Last Updated: 12/20/2124 _ Displaying Entry
Species Name: Hivecrawler (Inuctus copiae) Habitat: The Ruined Catacombs Average Height: ~1 ft /~0.30 m Average Weight: Not measured Diet: Roots, ferns, flowering plants, lichen Temp. Regulation: Ectothermic Abilities: Capacity for speech (limited), hivemind, prehensile forelimbs Disposition: Confrontational Threat Level: 3
An insect-like organism with a large brown carapace that resembles that of a pillbug. Their faces are slightly humanoid and they are often bipedal, standing up on their deceptively flimsy-looking back legs as a defensive stance to ward off predators. The species is sexually dimorphic, with the females being much larger than the males and sporting two pairs of translucent beetle-like wings. The males have small pincers on their frontmost legs, vertical white pupils, and tan antennae, while the females sport black antennae, horizontal pupils, and face markings that remind me somewhat of clown makeup. Rather harmless alone, but can be dangerous in groups.
USO-08 are only found in the Ruined Catacombs, and it appears that every member of the species belongs to a single collective colony. Their nest resembles that which termites build, only much bigger; the tallest of them almost reaches the cavernâs ceiling. Despite this, it seems that the bulk of the nest is actually underground, with the spires only serving as entrances. The males appear to be in charge of foraging for food, as I often spotted one or two scuttling about throughout the Catacombs in my time there. I was only able to observe the females after stumbling upon the nest, where I spotted them repairing a spire that had been damaged, presumably by some other creature. I wasnât able to witness much else, however, as I was promptly swarmed by the creatures in a manner that was remarkably well organized. Sole members of the species continued to assault me unprompted on my journey through the catacombs, suggesting an extremely efficient method of communication between members of the species; perhaps even a hivemind of sorts? Unfortunately, research on this species has been forced to halt, as the Ruined Catacombs is now completely inaccessible to me.

Chara Laughs To Hide Pain
âI should have laughed it off, like you did...â. One single line with so much misinformation surrounding it. This line is interpreted in many ways, but only one of these interpretations is accurate, the one that claims that Chara is laughing to cope with pain. Here are the reasons why this interpretation best reflects canon lore.
The Majority Of Undertaleâs Cast Copes Through Laughter
While it may be easy to write Chara off as a cold and unfeeling child at first, we have to look at the other instances of laughing in Undertale.
Toriel laughs when we kill her,
Undyne smiles as her body is fading away,
Mettaton smiles right before he explodes,Â
Sans jokes around as heâs dying,
Two npcs in Snowdin comment on how everyone laughs to cope,
Snowdrakes Dad laughs about being a terrible father,
and this isnât even every instance of this happening, this is only the main examples. Now we need to look at when Chara laughs and analyze why they were laughing.
Every Instance In Which Chara Laughs And The Context Behind Each One
To truly understand why Chara is laughing as a coping mechanism we have to look at every instance of them doing so. The first being in tape #3 in the true lab.Â
Chara and Asriel are talking about when they accidentally poisoned their father, Asgore. Asriel comments on how he shouldâve âlaughed it off like Chara didâ. Chara is laughing in this instance because they feel terrible for getting their Dad sick. Theyâre trying to make light out of a hard situation. This is proven by the fact that Chara chose to die the same way they poisoned their father, which from a psychological standpoint shows that they felt guilty and thought that the only way they could redeem themselves is through dying the same way someone they cared for almost did. Itâs also worth noting that âlaughing something offâ could simply mean not taking something as seriously as it is.Â
Whether or not they actually laughed or not itâs clear they were trying to make light of a hard situation, and likely trying to make the rest of their family not worry as much by doing so. The second instance is during the encounter with Snowdrakeâs Mother in the true lab.Â
Whatâs happening here is that due to immense distress from seeing the mother of someone who Chara is implied to have known in such a poor state they disassociate and assume Frisk is laughing. When they realize that Frisk isnât laughing they say âyou didnât do that?â and then follow up with âBut itâs not funnyâ. As you can see Chara directly states that itâs not funny after they realize whatâs going on. This is also meant to be a direct parallel to the previously mentioned dialogue with Snowdrakes Dad.Â
The last instance of Chara laughing is during the no mercy route. Chara smiles during encounters,
Chara laughs during the RG01 and RG02 encounter,Â
Chara laughs at Flowey,
and Chara smiles when we meet them.Â
While this may look bad at first, the actual reason Chara is laughing/smiling during this is quite depressing. As mentioned in this post Chara doesnât actually enjoy killing. Theyâre in mental distress during this entire route. Theyâre watching their friends and family die after all. They start smiling when we encounter a monster because they have no hope left, they realize that we arenât going to stop so thereâs no point in trying anymore, they have to follow us. They laugh at RG01 and RG02 because theyâre watching us tear apart a couple. Itâs also a reference to the book Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto.Â
(This book seems to heavily inspired Charaâs character as well, as it deals with suicide, depression, knives, golden flowers, tea, and a trans character.) Chara laughs at Flowey because theyâre watching us try and kill their brother, and we know they donât really want to kill him because they hesitate before killing him later on.Â
The smile Chara adorns when we meet them is the same one that the red demon npc who talks about coping through laughter has.
In both cases this smile is a mask, hiding the fact that the one who wields it has given up hope, theyâve surrendered to a cruel world and would rather hide themselves than deal with the pain theyâre experiencing. In the case of the no mercy route, Chara has given up hope for a happy ending, for a way to stop us on our killing spree, and theyâve submitted to their purpose, power.
The Migospel Truth
So how do we definitively know that Chara laughs to cope? Look no further than the enemy, Migospel. This monster is a hard mode exclusive that is a replacement for Migosp. It acts differently in private then it does around other monsters, just like Migosp. The catch is that its way darker than youâd think itâd be.Â
Migospel laughs to hide its pain around its friends and then when itâs alone it drops its ruse. Hereâs some of the other lines it can say via the Undertale wiki.
Now letâs take a closer look at what the name âMigospelâ actually means. It appears to be a combination of the words âMimeâ and âGospelâ. The âMimeâ half of their name suggests that theyâre mimicking something, or rather, someone. While âGospelâ would typically have religious connotations it also refers to a hyperbole for something that is true. So essentially Migospel is âA Mimic Of The Truthâ. They are emulating the true behavior of another character. That character is Chara. Still not convinced? Look no further than this parallel:
TL;DR
In conclusion Chara laughs to hide the pain, this is evident by the other uses of laughing as a coping mechanism in Undertale, the situations in which Chara laughs and the context behind them, and the fact that Migospel is a parallel to Chara.Â

Undeefell Ruins Enemies
Mild trigger warning on Whimsum
Bullfroggit: Basically Froggit but meaner and more aggressive Blynde
(Loox): Lost his eye and is more mean but also more cowardly
Fell! Whimsum (No new name idea): Whimsum already had references to suicide. So Fell Whimsum has a noose around it's neck and begs you to kill it. It's meant to also demonstrate how the genocide route of Underfell being treated more like mercy route than the pacifist route
Fell Migosp: Is the opposite. Instead of aggressive when with friends and docile alone. It is docile when with friends due to being scared of them and aggressive when alone due to anger of you killing the other monsters or lashing out cause it's alone depending on your actions
Fell Vegetoid: Instead of wanting you to eat it, it wants to eat you!
Fell Moldsmol: Is acidic and that's about it. Just acidic slime
Fell Misgospel: Just a crazy jester who hates being around others but is happy though violent when alone
Fell Parsnik: Turned to Stone. The snakes control the body like a puppet.
Fell Moldsmol: Acidic and stores bones of other enemies within it. Juggles a skull that it sometimes uses in place of a head. Misgospels only friend
