I needed a couple handheld FRS radios for my Yellowstone trip as well as other hiking and off-road trips where cellphone reception is spotty or not at all where groups need to communicate for whatever reason just outside or yelling or visual range. FRS radios donât require a license, they have a great range in the open areas, decent range in wooded areas and limited range use in urban and hilly or mountainous areas. HAM radios can be programmed to FRS frequencies if the majority of people have FRS radios like this. My use in Yellowstone stone will be for exploring and in the event we get separated can reach out to each other for an emergency or âhey look at thisâ so we donât miss anything.
