Day 12: Chinese Water Torture
Midgie bite update: the huge one (with the teethmarks) on my stomach has turned into a big, red rash causing the involvement of the first aid man at work yesterday. Additionally, I spent two thirds of today running away from a black beetle that would not vacate the ten centimetre circumference around my head. It may have looked like something from a slapstick comedy to fortunate onlookers but I'm sure that kind of thing could be used to induce serious mental collapse. Kind of like Chinese water torture.
Anyway, yesterday I was posted back to my trusty fudge counter. I don't mind working there at all because there's always something to do. I really like visual merchandising; I sometimes think it might be my calling in life. I can see myself making a great career out of rearranging teddies on shelves. Another good thing about working there is the fact that they have lots of window panes that you can stand outside and wash. If you're clever enough you can go over each one twice, thus creating more time to top up your tan while you do it. Always thinking.Â
The 'Yum Yum' clientele was on top form yesterday. One man professed his hatred for the UK because of all the taxes we're charged. Which was rather ironic since the item he was buying had a sales tax added to the price when he brought it to the till. Another one asked me to say hi to 'William and Kate' for him when I arrived back in Britain. Because Britain is such a small country that I'm obviously bezzie mates with the man who is second in line to the throne. The most irritating thing is that nobody from America has  heard of anywhere in England besides London so whenever they ask where you're from and you tell them they always, ALWAYS come back with 'So how far is that from London?'
Today was my day off so I went on a trip to a gorge. It was really pretty seeing all the waterfalls and the river path but it was all uphill and it was a very hot day. And, of course, there was the incident with the aforementioned beetle. Also, I've never met a group of people who are so snap happy ever before in my life; we'd walk for five minutes then stop for ten to pose by the river, resulting in hundreds of pictures which are all exact replicas of each other.
The next stop was Cannon Mountain. We got to travel up to the summit in a cable car that could hold up to 80 people, which was pretty cool. The views from the top were stunning but there's only so long you can spend looking out across the landscape and so I was quite happy to sit and sunbathe. When you've been up one mountain, you've been up them all, in my opinion. Bah, humbug.
Tonight, some of the people who work in the retail department of Story Land went out for a meal in a town called Jackson, which is a short drive up the road. It was nice to see everyone outside of work but I made an awful food-related decision by choosing to have the steak. I did not realise that 'steak' in American English translates as 'massive slab of fat and cartilage which can only be cut into with the help of an machete'. I think I may now have food poisoning to add to my list of ailments. In fact, just reminiscing about that first bite has made me physically sick to my stomach...
