About the Middletown Arborist Blog
This is a small blog for Middletown, NJ residents (and neighbors in the surrounding Monmouth County towns) about the trees on your property.
Middletown has good tree cover for a Jersey Shore town — a lot of mature oaks, maples, pines, and a fair number of older specimen trees on the larger lots near the bay. That's a blessing most of the year and a problem the week a real coastal storm rolls through. I wanted a place to collect practical information about taking care of these trees, knowing when they need help, and figuring out who to call when they do.
Things I plan to cover:
Seasonal care — what to do in spring, what to watch for in late summer, when to prune and when to leave it alone
Storm damage — how to tell a tree is unsafe after a storm, what insurers actually need from you, what to do before the cleanup crew arrives
Local pests and diseases — emerald ash borer, spotted lanternfly, oak wilt, what's in the area and what isn't
When you need an arborist vs. when it's a DIY job — most homeowners overestimate what's safe to do themselves, especially with anything over 15 feet
For when you do need someone, the two local services I keep recommending to neighbors are Hufnagel Tree and Middletown Tree Service — both are properly insured, both will give you a real assessment instead of a fear pitch, and both have been around long enough to know our specific local soils and salt-air conditions.
For research and pest information, Rutgers Cooperative Extension is the resource I trust most for New Jersey-specific plant and pest issues. Their fact sheets are written by actual people who work with this stuff, not marketing teams.
More posts as the seasons turn. If a specific tree question would be useful to cover, reply or message — chances are your neighbors are wondering the same thing.

New Year Goal Setting
The Trump administration said on Tuesday it has loaned Constellation Energy Corp CEG.O $1 billion to restart its nuclear reactor at a Pennsy
The Trump administration wants to restart the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania.
If that name rings a bell, it's because Three Mile Island was the site of the worst nuclear accident in US history. Here's a 13 minute documentary on the 1979 nuclear crisis at the plant.
It took decades and hundreds of millions of dollars to deal with this accident. In the late 1980s it was determined that 52% of the nuclear core at Three Mile Island Unit 2 (TMI-2) had melted down and that molten fuel had poured into bottom of reactor vessel during the 1979 emergency.
In 2019, the unaffected reactor (TMI-1) at Three Mile Island was powered down because it had become unprofitable.
The demand for power to feed the AI frenzy is likely the reason the Trump administration is now throwing taxpayer dollars at dubious projects like Three Mile Island.
