“I gave her an A because she’s a great teacher and she explains her lessons quickly and she uses words that everybody uses so it makes everybody understand the lesson. I’ve had Ms. Capalla for 2 years and she is very awesome. I hope I would get to see her one day again.”
I liked this class because I haven’t tried photography and when I did, I got the hang of it and I liked it. So basically I tried something new and it turned out great.”

Day 8
So we are jumped into distance learning today. The district let us know to plan for kids to do 2 and a half hours of school related stuff a week, meaning to plan about half an hours worth of work per class per week. For some reason this simultaneously stresses me out and makes me feel better. We have the 8th grader's next 4 weeks planned out and ready to go and tomorrow we will be working on the 7th graders. It's kinda nice because our principal wants us to just team up with the other teachers and have one set of assignments for all the students no matter the teacher.
I really hate that this is my first experience as a teacher, but I keep telling myself if I can get through this I can get through anything once my career really starts.
Last week, we highlighted the need to increase diverse books in our school/class libraries or curricula and examined the demographics of the population that you serve. 📊⠀ ⠀ So what’s next?⠀ ⠀ A book audit.⠀ ⠀ 😯 I know that sounds intimidating…but basically, a book audit is when you take an inventory of your books in light of specific characteristics, such as the ethnicity of the protagonist.⠀ ⠀ You could use this helpful tally sheet from @sfpsmom (bit.ly/DiverseLibraryInventory) or create your own in Google Sheets or Excel. Including the titles of the books is optional. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, just do the tally marks. The point is to identify whose voices are being represented through the books.⠀ ⠀ After you’ve gone through your school/class library and/or curricula, total up each column.⠀ ⠀ Now, sit with your data.⠀ ⠀ 👉🏽 What patterns emerged? ⠀ ⠀ 🗣 Whose voices are the loudest? Quietest?⠀ ⠀ 🤔 How does this data compare with the demographics noted last week?⠀ ⠀ ⭕️ What gaps need to be filled?⠀ ⠀ These are hard questions. Feelings may arise that may not feel too good. Remember that diversifying your library/curricula is important work. We know better. Now we have to do better.⠀ ⠀ Next week, we will explore some notable nuances to consider when examining diverse books. Middle school wins and woes
I already know most of my students names. I didn’t even have to play name gems this year. WIN!
I only have one class that is going to be difficult and it’s due to one student. Just one. It’s crazy how one person can change the dynamic of an entire class. Regardless, I really like the kid. They just have a problem controlling themselves. Kid is 12. They will learn.
I’m exhausted by 4pm but I’m on my feet all day walking around. I haven’t allowed myself to get comfy behind my desk during classes because I fear this early students will take advantage of it and it will take me forever to get control back.
I’m extremely happy to be close to home. The staff has been awesome and supportive. The only thing I’m dreading is all the work for the observations and stuff. Also, technology at the school is lacking a bit and no google integration. You win some you lose some.
I’m always down for some advice so shoot it my way if you have any.
