I’ll put my cards on the table. I’m here mostly to defend Jeffery’s take—though not unequivocally. A flight attendant wishing passengers “a blessed day” may not qualify as “creeping Christian nationalism,” but neither is it innocuous, as so many of her critics have insisted. In context, it certainly is a Christian phrase, and uttering it assumes Christian normativity. A Christian not having to think about or even recognize that assumption, and the subtle social dominance it conveys, is Christian privilege.
Reading about microaggressions, and as I understand it, in America (american culture???) the Batkids have at least one or two features each that would have them be discriminated against. Imagine the gut-punch, like, young Dick as Robin saving this guy, being thanked so profusely, and then the next day he meets them and to his horror, they make a snide remark about him and his skin color and his accent and his relation to Bruce. Just.... the heartbreak, for each of the kids, because this'll happen again and again. I mean, Bruce too. Due to his religion. Risking your life every night for a city that does it's best to prove how not worth it it is every day.
We've been raised by generations who had a "don't look, don't ask" approach to disability. What we really need for true change around disability is open (but not intrusive) conversations. Don't be afraid to say hello to disabled people, treat us just like you would everyone else. Nina Tame, a disability advocate from the UK uses the example of glasses as an assistive device and how strange intrusive questions can be. You wouldn't ask someone what is wrong with their eyes when they’re wearing glasses, but you may let them know that you like their glasses! The truth is that the stigma around mobility aids is a very tangible example of the micro-aggressions experienced by disabled folks each and every day. By creating a positive narrative around mobility aids, we can be actively inclusive of disabled people. Every empowering conversation, every disabled person you actively include takes us one step closer to tackling ableism.

I finally posted these on The Allspark, so I guess I’ll put the here too.
The first two are additional illustrations I did for annotated versions of Not All Megatrons and Micro-Aggressions that Jim sold at TFNation.
And the last one was an illustration that I did for the Combiner fight in Cultural Appropriation, but didn’t get used in the final version in favor of Josh Burcham’s image.
What you do deal with is a whole load of racial “micro-aggressions” whether that is at school or beyond. Someone might say: “Maro, you speak well. I’m surprised – you don’t speak like a black guy” or “Do people only live in huts in Africa?” or if you wear a suit or something, “You’re not dressed very black today.” Often it’s laughed off as “banter” or a joke, but the thing about racism is it is a matter of fact. If you say something that is racist it’s not dependent on my intention, how well I know you, if you were given permission – racism is racism.
