My first travel in 2025 was a quick road trip down to Philly to see @mickalenethomas 's dazzling exhibition "All About Love" at the @barnesfoundation. It closes January 12 - do not miss it!!!

All About Love is the first major international exhibition of Mickalene Thomas’s work, centering the beauty, power, and sensuality of Black women through photography, collage, painting, video, and installation. @mickalenethomas’s art celebrates her close relationships with mothers, daughters, lovers, and friends, presenting empowered images of beauty and desire through a Black feminist perspective. Curated by Renée Mussai (@mussairenee), this exhibition will be at the Barnes until January 12, the only East Coast stop on its tour.

The exhibition presents 13 new large-scale mixed media photo collages inspired by Thomas’ research into the imagery of #Blackfemaleerotica featured in the calendars of #Jetmagazine and the pages of the 1950s French publication Nus Exotique. The exhibition will be Thomas’ first solo exhibition at Yancey Richardson, the culmination of a decade of collaboration beginning in 2012 with the gallery’s presentation of tête-à-tête, a group show curated by Thomas.

Throughout her career, Thomas has combined abstraction and figuration, and pushed the conventions of painting, photography, collage, and printmaking beyond their traditional limits, often incorporating unconventional materials in her work. In her recent series of photo collages, printed directly on metal using the dye sublimation process, individual elements of each work are cut out and layered one on top of another creating a dimensional surface. On top of the printed imagery, Thomas has added gestural drawings highlighted by her characteristic glittering multi-colored rhinestones. The result is a dynamic three-dimensional construction that undercuts any narrative reading and draws attention to the fluidity of identity, collectiveness of culture, and malleability of history in modern society.

“This exhibition is a full circle moment for me in many ways,” said Thomas. “The process of creating these new works was an opportunity to revisit topics and mediums that have inspired me for decades with a new perspective. je t’adore celebrates the beauty and power of Black women through the lens of popular culture and collective history both past and present.”
