Rewatched Iron Lung recently. Still a good movie overall with some minor gripes (Mark could benefit from an experienced editor since some scenes started to drag). But after watching the movie again, my biggest gripe is something I didn’t notice the first time around; the voice acting of the supporting cast.
It’s so weird to say this but the voice acting of the supporting cast felt too cheesy and overacted at times. It’s hard to describe, but when I watched the movie again, it felt like the voice actors were trying too hard to compensate for the fact that their characters were mainly disembodied voices the entire time.
Oh, here’s a comparison, hopefully this makes sense. It felt too much like stage acting. You have Markiplier there who is doing a balanced performance. Not too loud, subtle when he needs to be, and so on. And then you have the voice actors going hard as fuck on every line, to the point that it feels like they’re onstage trying to enunciate for a live audience. It gives off the feeling that Mark filmed all his scenes on his own, then everyone else recorded with just the script to bounce off of. It’s subtle but you can tell there’s a disconnect with Mark’s performance and the voice actors’ performances.
I’d still rate the movie a solid 8/10 since the hammy voice acting isn’t too distracting. But still, the disconnect is distinct enough that you can’t really unsee it (or unhear it in this case).
