Tommy shouldn't feel this shook up after seeing David. The man was twenty years to the left in his past. He'd stopped thinking he'd ever see the other man again. It was the hope of a love sick teenage boy, besides LA is a huge town and he had no reason to believe David had ever returned to the city after college.
Last time he'd seen David he'd been a tall, lanky kid with intricate cornrows, he'd been awkward and sweet, and he'd had the warmest, friendliest smile Tommy had ever seen. He had a smile that made Tommy want to be nice for once in his pissed off rebellious teenage existence. That version of David Hale had been the sun at the center of seventeen year old Tommy's universe.
"You wanna talk about it?" Evan asked sweetly as he straddled Tommy's lap setting aside the book Tommy had been attempting to read for the past half hour. Tommy wants to, but he doesn't know if he can, or where to start. For so long David had been such a closely guarded secret, had been a part of his past that he hasn't shared for fear of damaging his memories of that perfect summer. But if anyone will listen without judgment, without tarnishing something so precious to the tapestry of his life it's Evan. His breath is shaky as he exhales, resting his hands on Evan's hips. Touching and being touched by Evan grounds him in the present.
"Do you remember telling me how Abby was your most trans-formative relationship until me?" Evan nodded continuing to hold Tommy gently with his strong arms draped over Tommy's shoulders in a loose hug. "David was my Abby." He watches as Evan's eyes click with understanding. The way his lips form an o. But there's no jealousy, no judgment. Just understanding. So Tommy keeps talking.
He starts at the beginning. How David had literally walked head first into Tommy, leaving him covered the sweet tea he'd just bought. How David had turned into a blushing stammering mess. How David hadn't been scared of Tommy because he didn't have any preconceived notions of Tommy. How he'd stuttered over his words insisting on replacing the sweet tea that Tommy had wounded up wearing over the front of his shirt.
