Here’s my hot take:
Michael Burnham was a full commander as XO of the Shenzhou before the Klingon war, and was restored to that position in season two of Discovery.
Una Chin-Riley was just made full commander in Season 4 of Strange New Worlds, despite serving as XO of the Enterprise, which is a bigger ship, for years.
I think Michael Burnham is a nepo baby.
Her dad, Vulcan ambassador to the Federation, who worked closely with Star Fleet, put in a word to get her her commission in the first place… 🤷🏾♀️
(Ok I do really think Michael worked her ass off and Una was overlooked because of the enterprise’s five year mission meant she was far from the hierarchy that could have promoted her and then the whole Illyrian thing but y’know)

Michael Burnham propaganda: She's awesome!! Imo mostly also a really well written and complex character. People hate her for being Spock's adoptive sister but I think it's great that er get a female character raised as Vulcan who has to learn that her emotions are Fine Actually and don't make her lesser. Also her hair!! Iconic!!! Changing through the seasons because well we all gotta change our hair sometimes don't we.
I'm not mad if Rey wins - hers is a case of fandom misogyny and weird character writing, but Michael was also trapped in a mid to bad piece of media with diminishing returns. I want to free her so she can live up to her incredible potential

Michael Burnham's whole character is protecting the thesis in extraordinary circumstantial challenges to it. Other characters know this too, and help, because she carries it. "We're still looking up," Saru says to her.
