I fell down a rabbit hole hard over the weekend and made over everyone. You can read their biographies under the cut. I tried to respect their original characters but also took a few liberties. Part two soon!
To the public, Lavina Chopra, former real estate agent turned mayor of Henford-on-Bagley, appears stern, conservative, and highly respectable. She quadruple-checks the language of every document she signs and refuses to allow a single person in her officeâs employ to slack off. However, sheâs always lived by a much looser philosophy in her personal life, and friends know her better for her guffawing laugh, heated culinary opinions, and messy love life â the latter of which may one day prove her political downfall if she isnât careful.
When his friends get on his back about still living with his mother in his 20s, Rahul reminds them that, a., sheâs the freaking mayor and, b., he doesnât see them getting a successful farm-to-table restaurant off the ground with next to no personal debt. Heâs saving up a sweet little nest egg while occupying the entire third floor of a mansion, and theyâre scrounging up dollar bills for beer runs while renting a cramped apartment with five friends. Sure, he has to sneak his teenage girlfriend in via ivy trellis, but thatâs only a minor inconvenience. As far as heâs concerned, heâs living the high life.
Kim is well-liked for her generous and good-natured personality, contributing heavily to the townâs economy through the pumpkin patch she operates in the autumn and the produce stand she keeps fully stocked with seasonal fruits and vegetables year-round. Not much is known about her personal life, and she prefers to keep it that way, though, ironically enough, she can be a bit of an overzealous gossip when it comes to other peopleâs daily dramas. Sheâs a patient listener, which sometimes makes her produce stand feel more like a confession booth or a therapistâs office.
As Henford-on-Bagleyâs creature keeper, Michael occupies a small cottage in the heart of the Bramblewood, keeping an eye on the wild animal population and making sure they come to no harm at human hands. His vast knowledge on everything from the preferred treats of every rabbit in a 10-mile radius to the best times and places for foraging mushrooms, make him a boon to locals and tourists alike. But if he catches you overstepping natureâs boundaries, heâll give you an earful, especially if youâre one of those Social Bunny âinfluencersâ snapping endless âglampingâ selfies, not that he knows what any of those words mean.
The Crumplebottom cousins, Agatha and Agnes, are town legends. Their cozy little cottage is even an official stop on the historical Henford-on-Bagley tour. They help keep the villageâs quaint traditions alive, even as it fills up with more modern-minded residents. Though never married, Agatha is known for her playfully flirtatious demeanor. Everyone who visits the Crumplebottomsâ flower stand when sheâs at the helm falls a little bit in love with her. Along with Agnes, she owns and operates Cordeliaâs Greenhouse in the Bramblewood and is co-founder of the Henford-on-Bagley Garden Society.
Agnes couldnât be more unlike her cousin, Agatha. Ornery and old-fashioned, she spends her days muttering under her breath about how the whole townâs âgone to potâ in recent years. Getting whacked upside the head with her signature battered purse is considered a badge of honor among many. Despite their differences, the cousins get along well, though itâs likely Agnes whoâs primarily the reason no one but them has been admitted to the Henford-on-Bagley Garden Society in its decades of operation. If you catch her in a rare good mood, mostly while cross-stitching, she may regale you with stories of âthe good old days.â
Although naturally a more social creature than his husband, Ian felt like he was getting too old for the nightlife and gladly traded it in for the quiet life in Henford-on-Bagley. These days, The Gnomeâs Arms on a Saturday night is plenty busy enough to keep his blood pumping. A lover of corny jokes and harmless pranks, he also enjoys collecting new recipes to cook for himself and Derek. Once every summer, he creates a menu from their favorites and the two of them host a dinner and nectar-tasting event for the entire community.
After toiling away as a paper pusher for years, Derek decided he wanted to make the most of his retirement and moved with his husband, Ian, to an old nectary in the Bramblewood. Nectar-making quickly became more of a job than a hobby, and now the two of them spend much of their time turning down offers from faceless corporations to buy up their modest little operation. But they truly wouldnât have it any other way. Itâs just them, their grapes, and their trusty Cocker Spaniel, Ethel. In his spare time, Derek also writes childrenâs books set in the countryside.
