I read “A Thousand Splendid Suns” during Eid holidays and the novel just kills you really... the writer has attempted unveiling at two levels: firstly, it unveils the veiled Afghani women and the impact of war on their personal lives, and secondly, the novel is an unveiling at the national level of the veil that is forced upon the war stricken people by the news channels. X dead. Y injured. This particular diction and the way it is uttered makes us desensitized to war and it’s horrifying effects and aftermath. It has made me see all the refugees and war-torn people at a human level: as same as mine. It has made me see them in a different light and has made me find my miseries and complaints trivial in comparison to theirs. It’s quite sad how the shrine of geopolitics and avarice of those in power demands sacrifice of thousands of innocent lives!!!
Well, I can’t read books anymore because my exams are starting on Monday so...
