Well seeing as this is basically my FFXIV blog now and not just Kaito, here’s some cute pictures of Mal with new shinies from Ishgard!
Planning
It had been almost a month since Kaito had his last piano lesson, and he was actually quite eager for it. Naturally that was in part because it meant getting to spend more time teasing Mhalv'a, but mainly it was due to the fact that he'd been planning something and wanted a bit of help putting it together. He'd been practicing whenever he had a chance to sneak up to the studio while S'aeil was at work or hunting in order to prepare.

Growth
"Mou ichido!"
Kaito's hands glided along the piano keys swiftly; he fumbled a couple of notes, but each keystroke seemed more confident than the last. He'd progressed from scales to chords and arpeggios and reading sheet music, impressing his sensei with how quickly he picked up on each new skill the Bard taught him. In just a few days, they'd already met for several additional lessons that Kaito was all too happy to pay for.

As promised, Kaito had sent his first payment of fifty thousand gil to Mhalv'a well in advance. A small part of the Bard truly wished the little jerk would forget, or that he'd spend the money on... uh... what did Kaito spend money on? Alcohol? Drugs? Never mind, he didn't want to consider any additional possibilities. Regardless, he had no excuse to miss their first lesson at that point, unfortunately.
There was also the little matter of Kaito's older brother having avoided him for nearly a week at that point. Hinan was feeling depressed about his role in the younger's life and how awkward things had become since his recent outburst in regards to S'aeil (among some additional awkward encounters following that). When not working, the warrior was spending the majority of his time at Mhalv'a's home - which of course, Mhalv’a was thrilled to pieces about.
Hopefully he won't bring it up... the Miqo’te thought as he headed over to Aeluan's house. He was about fifteen measures early for the lesson, and as he entered the empty studio, he said a silent prayer to Menphina that Kaito would be late or just not show up at all.
Just before the bell struck seven though, as Mhalv'a was taking a bit of time to practice the piano himself, the door opened and Kaito entered the room.
"Konban wa," the Au Ra greeted in a surprisingly level tone. Mhalv'a had expected the boy to try and scare him, but the normally crass Shinobi's demeanor was mellower than usual.
"Good evening, Akaruta-san," the Bard greeted, bowing his head politely. "Have a seat next to me and we'll begin."
For a moment, as Kaito sat, Mhalv'a detected a hint of a glower in the younger man's eyes, but he decided it best to brush it off.
The Miqo'te placed his hands on the keys, then hit one in the center of the piano. "This key is known as Middle C. Think of it as the Aetheryte to which you have attuned to Return," he explained. "A song that is said to be in the key of C Major uses this as its starting point, with the notes moving as such on the white keys." With that, he slowly crawled his hand along the keyboard, playing each note in succession. "These notes in order are called C, D, E, F, G, A, B, and lastly C again, one octave - or eight notes - above Middle C."
Kaito watched Mhalv'a's hand intently, but the words were going in one horn and out the other. There was too much on his mind for him to process exactly what was being taught. For a while, he simply stared at the keys, his brow furrowing as if he were concentrating on the lesson.
"--ruta-san. Akaruta-san! Kaito!"
The Au Ra snapped out of his thoughts with a start when he heard Mhalv'a's shouting. Sheepishly, he turned to look at the Miqo'te, whose eyes were narrowed and his ears pinned back.
"Are you quite certain that you're serious about these lessons?" he asked in a deadpan tone. For once, the Bard's normally blank expression seemed to properly convey how he was feeling - he was pissed.
Kaito shook his head a couple of times, blurting out a quick, "Yes, I'm serious!" His teacher didn't look convinced though, and he slumped slightly. "Look, I just... got a lotta stuff on my mind..." he muttered.
"... would you like me to continue?" the Bard asked after a brief pause.
Eventually, the Au Ra nodded in agreement, and the lesson progressed. He soon had his own hand on the keyboard, and was playing the same scale Mhalv'a had shown him, slowly and unsteadily. One couldn't deny that he was quite good with his hands, being a very skilled thief and pickpocket, but this was extremely unfamiliar territory for him. He knew nothing about music, other than being fairly decent at karaoke (provided he was drunk enough, of course).
"Mou ichido," Mhalv'a stated, taking the opportunity to practice his Hingan as Kaito practiced piano.
The Au Ra started again, finding it easier this time, but paused halfway through, keeping the G key held down for some time.
The Bard was growing annoyed again, but he kept it under wraps this time. "... Kaito?"
His question was met initially with silence.
Without warning, Kaito slammed a fist down onto the keys, causing Mhalv'a to jump from his seat and fall back on the floor. "Why the fuck is Hinan avoiding me?!" the Raen snapped.
"Akaruta-san, ki wo tsukete kudasai! Pianos are expensive!" the Bard hissed.
Kaito quickly withdrew his hand from the keys, then turned to his teacher, who was still getting his bearings. Slowly, the Miqo'te managed to get back on his feet and smoothed out his tail, then looked up at his pupil. The expression on Kaito's face made Mhalv'a's jaw drop slightly; the boy looked like he was on the verge of tears.
"I... please, let's just continue the lesson," Mhalv'a requested in a gentler tone.
"No, gods dammit, I just paid you fifty thousand fucking gil, I should be allowed to use this time however the fuck I want!" the Au Ra yelled. "And I want to know why my aniki hates me!"
That statement alone tugged at Mhalv'a's heartstrings; it almost felt like the start of the exact conversation he had with Hinan the previous week. As much as he disliked Kaito, he could see that the Raen was essentially feeling the same way his lover had. "Kaito-kun..." the Miqo'te responded softly, eventually taking a seat on the piano bench next to his student once more. "Hinan doesn't hate you..."
"Then why the fuck haven't I seen him in a week?? You have to know what's going on, because if you hadn't seen him, you'd have sounded the alarums a day later," Kaito growled as tears began rolling down his freckled cheeks.
The Miqo'te's face flushed, and a vaguely guilty expression washed over him. "I... yes, you're correct... Hinan's been staying at my house," he explained quietly. "I'm not the one you should be talking to about this though."
A frustrated snarl escaped the Au Ra's throat, and he turned to thump his head against the piano. "How do I keep fucking things up... why did I even come back if all my siblings are just gonna hate me..." he whispered, wrapping his arms around himself to try and find some semblance of comfort. "Aneue made everyone think I was a pervert, Aelu-niisan thought I faked my own death as some sort of sadistic prank, and now Hinan--... I thought of all of them, he'd be the most happy to have me back..."
With a defeated sigh, Mhalv'a wrapped his arms around Kaito's neck and pulled the Au Ra against him. Even if he still disliked the guy, he knew how much it hurt to feel like a sibling might hate him; besides, if he was going to be with Hinan, he might as well get used to being a big brother to Kaito as well. "Hinan is happy to have you back, but it's complicated... this is something you really need to speak with him about yourself," he reiterated in a soothing tone as he gently swiped a tear from Kaito's cheek with his thumb. "I know you're having to go out of your way a great deal for them, but... don't you think your brothers and sister deserve it? To speak with you directly about the problems you're having?"
Surprisingly, the Raen wrapped his arms around the Keeper in return and buried his face in the smaller man's shoulder, giving a little nod in response. He was starting to see Mhalv'a as more of a brother each time they interacted, even if Kaito himself wasn't ever going to be seen that way in return.
The Miqo'te moved a hand to tentatively stroke Kaito's hair, doing his best to comfort the young Shinobi despite having no worldly idea how he might do so - well, aside from providing comfort the way he did with his own younger siblings. He knew next to nothing about Kaito other than the fact that he was a sneaky, cocky little bastard. The more they interacted though, the more he could see the youngest Akaruta sibling's true colors, and they were far more vibrant and varied than he'd initially been led to believe.
"Kaito-kun... reach out to Hinan and ask to speak with him privately," Mhalv'a suggested, still speaking in a soft, compassionate tone. "I know for a fact that he will accept the offer."
After another moment or two, Kaito sat up and sniffled quietly as he looked away from the Miqo'te in shame. "All right... I'll... give it a try," he said softly. He was silent for a little while, just thinking about what he was going to say to his brother.
How had he dealt with his other siblings? Takumi wasn't really an issue; they'd be at each other's throats no matter what, so dealing with her bullshit wasn't that big a problem. They were the very definition of “best frienemies.” He thought Aeluan would be the toughest nut to crack, especially considering just how little his eldest brother approved of Kaito's personal ethics and actions, but their talk had ended on an incredibly positive note despite how rough it started out. Out of all of them, Hinan was the one he expected to have the fewest issues reconnecting with, but now, all because he happened to fall in love...
"We can reschedule the lesson," Mhalv'a said after giving Kaito a while to process everything.
It took Kaito a few measures to register what was said, but he looked rather surprised by it once he did. "... are you sure? Your terms were pretty strict, and I don't wanna--"
Mhalv'a held a hand up, signaling Kaito to be silent. "They are my terms, and as such, I reserve the right to change them as necessary," he stated. "Let me know when you've spoken with Hinan. At that point, we can schedule a new lesson for the full hour. No additional payment necessary."
The Au Ra blinked several times, and briefly looked like he might cry again. Thankfully for his dignity, he managed to swallow the lump in his throat and gave his teacher a couple of quick, shallow nods. "... thank you... Mal'valen-sensei..."
A faint smile crossed the Bard's lips at the response, and as he stood, he leaned in to press a soft kiss to the younger man's forehead. "Dou itashimashite, otouto," he responded, then headed to the door. "Contact me via linkpearl afterwards. You obviously know how," he added just before leaving, giving the Raen a smirk.
Kaito’s cheeks flushed slightly at being called “otouto.” It was very unexpected, but not unwelcome - he had just grown accustomed to the idea that Mhalv’a was always going to hate him. Once the door was shut, he let out a quiet sigh, then reached for the nearest piece of paper, scrawling a brief letter to send to Hinan.
