North America 173 years ago today: Outbreak of the Mexican–American War (13 May 1846) https://buff.ly/2JC22Vx With the annexation of Texas, the US inherited that state’s boundary dispute with Mexico. In a bid to settle the issue, as well as purchase the Mexican territories of Alta California and New Mexico, President Polk offered to pay $25 million and forgive damages caused to US citizens in Mexico since independence. The Mexican government refused, prompting Polk to order troops to occupy the disputed land north of the Rio Grande. Rather than continuing to march south, the US decided to bypass these forces by mounting an amphibious landing at Veracruz and marching west into the Mexican heartland. Despite attempts to keep the find secret, word spread across the country, reaching the East Coast by August. 9 - 29 MARCH 1847 - SIEGE OF VERA CRUZ - #MexicanWar Major General Winfield Scott, in command of a U.S. Army expeditionary force numbering 13,660 men, rendezvoused at Lobos Island late in February 1847. On 2 March, the army sailed for Vera Cruz, convoyed by a naval force under Commodore Matthew C. Perry. Scott chose a beach nearly 3 miles south of the city, beyond the range of Mexican artillery, for the landing. On the evening of 9 March more than 10,000 men went ashore in landing craft, consisting of 65 heavy surf boats that had been towed into position by steamers. The troops advanced inland over the sand hills against little opposition from the enemy force of 4,300 Mexican troops ensconced behind the city's walls. The landing of artillery, stores, and horses was delayed by a storm on 12 March that lasted for four days. By 22 March, the Army had seven 10-inch mortars ashore and emplaced about half a mile south of Vera Cruz, and the bombardment began that afternoon. The enemy guns in the town and fort replied, and it became apparent that the American mortars were ineffective. Scott asked for and received six naval guns from Commodore Perry. The six weapons included three solid-shot firing 32-pounder long guns and three 8-inch ("Paixhans") chambered shell guns. The battery's fire soon breached the walls and demoralized the defenders. The Mexican commander asked for a truce to discuss surrender terms, which were agreed upon two days later. The city officially capitulated on 29 March 1847. 22-23 FEBRUARY 1847 - BATTLE OF BUENA VISTA - #MexicanWar General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, military commander in chief and President of Mexico, took the field to personally assemble and command an army at San Luia Potosi. Major General Zachary Taylor's U.S. Army force numbered about 4,500 men, primarily in volunteer units drawn from several states' militias because nearly all of the regulars had been sent to Major General Winfield Scott's army preparing to invade Mexico at Vera Cruz. When Santa Anna learned that a numerically weaker force was left to defend the American logistics center at Saltillo, he advanced with an army of about 15,000 troops to attack in February 1847. Brigadier General John E. Wool, commanding the U.S. Army's Division of the Center, redeployed his the 3,400-man force from Agua Nueva to La Angostura, at the foot of the Sierra Madres, to block the Mexican advance, and chose excellent defensive terrain near hacienda de Buena Vista. On 22 February, Santa Anna attacked, attempted to overwhelm American positions with heavy columns of infantry. The outnumbered American infantry and artillery fought fiercely, but the Mexican soldiers advanced courageously despite their casualties and nearly outflanked the defenders. The next day, Taylor reached the battlefield with a small reinforcement that included the 1st Mississippi Rifle Regiment and additional artillery. The battle raged for several hours when the vanguard of a strong Mexican column emerged from a ravine and was closing in on their objective. Taylor repositioned forces, including the Mississippi Rifles and massed artillery firing canister at close range, that stopped the enemy attack and inflicted heavy casualties. On 13 September 1847, U.S. Army troops commanded by Lieutenant General Winfield Scott attacked Chapultepec Castle, a fortress on top of a hill 200 feet above the surrounding plain, and the Mexican army's military academy. The garrison and 200 cadets were reinforced to about 1,000 men plus artillery. Most defenders were posted in the fortress with the rest in entrenchment, batteries and redoubts outside its stone walls. The U.S. artillery preparation began at dawn and lasted to dusk on 12 September, and resumed at dawn the next day. The infantry attacked at 0800 with two divisions advancing from the west, on the right, with the 3d Division of Major General Gideon Pillow making the main effort and Brigadier General William Worth’s 1st Division in support. In the center, Brigadier John Quitman’s 4th Division approached along a causeway as Pillow’s division fought through a swamp and grove of trees to the base of Chapultepec hill, then charged up the slope under heavy fire, but halted when the scaling ladders did not arrive as planned. Mexican artillery fire on the causeway also stopped Quitman’s column. To break the impasse, Scott committed a brigade to outflank the position blocking the causeway and sent another carrying ladders to Pillow's assistance. The American attack over causeways and up rugged slopes under heavy fire resumed. Although many officers and NCOs became casualties, junior leaders and private soldiers rose to the occasion and continued the assault to win a resounding victory. The capture of the last obstacle blocking the way to Mexico City.
