MVAC Senior Research Associate Dr. Connie Arzigian describes manos and metates, grinding stones agricultural populations in North America would have used to prepare maize crops. She shows how Indigenous peoples would have used these tools and explains the patterns of grinding, polish, and other wear that tell archaeologists they were used to mill or crush materials like maize.

It's a long and scenic drive from Tacna, AZ to reach the Tinajas Atlas Mountains. It is worth the effort to climb and see the tanks that hold water nearly all the time. What a small source of life in a very dry and isolated area. We saw signs of past life in the metates (mealing stone) and a even a coyote. . #tinajasatlasmountains #tinajasatlastanks #metate #coyote #desert #barrygoldwaterrange #permitrequired #elcaminodeldiablo #arizonadesert #desert #water #climb #overland #remotedestination (at Tinajas Altas Mountains) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZxNbSqu9ow/?utm_medium=tumblr
