1. Normative type — mass ideology. confess belief in this ideology and be socially rewarded by the community you orbit. express heterodoxy and be punished.

2. descriptive type — the internal mental workings of an individual. How this person honestly sees the world. They might never acknowledge it to anyone.

3. social conflict - tumblr conducts it with accusations of bigotry and harm. metagame rewards those who inflict punishment pursuant to (1). the tool is being misused en masse

my strategy: change on (2) is my objective. wu wei to the present state of other people’s minds. meet it to change it.

I think helping more people see the light is the only way to build a better future. (light = love + listening + logic.) You can help a person grow like you’re watering a plant. you can’t browbeat a person into growth.

tumblr liberation movement strategy: punish enemy on (1). make spurious allegations. make your space hostile to disagreement.

I do not see victory on (1) as a legitimate objective. tumblr-style victory on (1) costs objectivity. objectivity is the pursuit of making one’s models well-matched to the world. all avenues must be employed to enact punisent, validity of logic notwithstanding. the law of crowds predicts that for each possible avenue of attack, some sap will push on it. the wisdom of the group drifts off-truth. (by wisdom of the group i mean: the positions and explanations endorsed by the orthodoxy pursuant to (1) in any given social circle.)

SO. this is bad. I think with a lot of intentionality we can pull this ship back on target. no one is going to help unless they believe changing their (2) is in their best interest. to this i urge you thus:

you believe you’re more oppressed than the other guy. since you believe, you should expect careful investigation to bear witness to the truth as you believe it. therefore you should argue your case earnestly (never make dubious generalizations to score conflict points.) when an argument on your own sude is shown to be spurious, you must smile and accept the loss-(the loss is paid for by your gain in information.)

if you’re right, you should expect the preponderence of evidence to support your position. if you’re wrong, you shouldn’t(!) want wrong to win. I wish(!) no one wanted wrong to win. Some person are benefiting from exploitation right now.

There are some individuals who want to win no matter if it’s right or wrong. Do you want to be one of those persons? Someone who just wants to be at the top of kyriarchy, even if it costs getting to the truth?

collective liberation from kyriarchy. Each of us has its own beliefs regarding how we get there. If my way is a true and helpful model of the world (helps us take useful action), I want it to gain community prominence. If my way has errors that benefit me at the expense of others, I want to update my beliefs.

The Tyranny of the Watcher: Why Metacognition is Not Liberation

The mirror that pretends to heal the wound by merely reflecting it is not wisdom, but a cage; true awakening is not rising above your pain to excuse your abuser, but catching the saintly mask your mind wears to survive it.

There is a widespread assumption that if a person can observe their own thoughts and emotions, they have somehow "transcended the ego." But that conclusion does not follow. The capacity to observe is just another normal capacity of the brain. What matters is what role that observing process begins to play.

In Julia's case it was something quite specific. This observing process does not merely witness. It evaluates, understands, explains, integrates, and then quietly assumes responsibility for everyone involved. It becomes the mature one, the tolerant one, the one who carries the emotional complexity. That is not the disappearance of ego. It is the emergence of a highly sophisticated identity.

In fact, it can be a more demanding identity than the ordinary ego. The ordinary ego says, "I was hurt." The sophisticated ego says, "I understand why everyone behaved as they did, therefore I should rise above my own hurt." The second can be much more painful because it deprives the first of protection. This is why in the end Julia defended her protective anger. If your "higher" perspective consistently dismantles your own boundaries, then it is not functioning as wisdom. It is functioning as an adaptation that keeps overriding your own needs. This is a harmful adaptation acquired from childhood trauma, not a transcendence.

The question is whether "great" teachers like Eckhart Tolle or Spira don't have a similar mechanism. We're not their therapists, but the slogans sound smooth and the books sell well. We cannot know his inner psychology. It is certainly possible, for people to construct a very stable identity around being "the one who has awakened." Psychology has long recognized similar phenomena. A person's identity can reorganize around being the detached observer, the healer, the compassionate one, the one beyond ordinary conflicts. Those identities may reduce some forms of suffering while creating new blind spots.

The important point is that metacognition is not liberation by itself. A thermostat monitors temperature. That does not make it free of the heating system. Likewise, one neural system can monitor another. That does not mean it has escaped the architecture of the brain. The monitoring system can itself acquire habits, biases, defensive functions, and a sense of identity. So nothing holly happens here unless we want to sell ourselves well and we are doing marketing.

Julia's experience illustrates this beautifully. Her"understanding self" has a predictable behavioral pattern. It repeatedly sides with the person who hurt you. That means it is not a neutral observer. It has its own strategy and is adaptive. And once you can say, "This process always does X," then that process itself has become an object of observation. It is no longer the unquestioned authority above normal cognitive abilities.

There is probably no final observer that stands outside all the others. There are multiple interacting models within the mind. Sometimes the protective one dominates. Sometimes the caretaking one. Sometimes the analytical one. Sometimes the frightened one. Each can claim to be "the real me." Our work is not to discover which one is the true self. It is to recognize the function each one serves, the situations in which it is useful, and the situations in which it has become an outdated adaptation.

It takes roughly 2-3 extra “learning opportunities” to catch up to peers. What’s a learning opportunity? You know when you can’t do something so you wait until the next day and solve the problem instantly? That’s the difference from one opportunity to the next 

But it doesn’t feel that way! Why? The book Science Anxiety: The Fear of Science and How to Overcome It figures there is a big emotional component to learning, so if you beat yourself up you prevent yourself from being able to change for the better. Not to say you shouldn’t be introspective or self critical!

----- I think that one of the huge unstated conclusions of this paper is that it completely dismantles any and all arguments for degrees / levels of higher education as proxy measurements for mental fortitude and “good” decision making. If everyone learns at the same rate, degrees, like other proxy indicators such as race and sex, become reflections of societal influences on individuals and not definitive measures of “intellect” or biological resilience.

This paper notes that there are significant differences in metacognition between political groups. However, the asymmetry in the distributions means that Conservatives are split between being either decent at critical thinking or being very bad at it. Instead of taking this as a reflection that Conservative beliefs cause an individual to make poor health decisions, it is the lack of neurological connections (“knowledge components”) to make them make those choices and not the other way around. Folks who live in the same area will naturally be exposed to the same knowledge components over time, potentially normalizing towards the same generalizable set of shared values and beliefs over time.

i wish i saw people first before i saw their defense mechanisms.

i wish i could hear words as a combination of letters being sounded out first before i started tracing where they come from.

i wish i could just feel something first without trying to figure out the patterns that produced them.

its like i cant stop wondering and dissecting things down to the quantum. i see everything a systems and patterns and objects of observation, and not only do i see the world like that, i feel everything too.

i dont just see someone's defense mechanism, i understand why they needed it. i dont just hear someone's words, i can feel the weight of them. i dont just see someone's anger, i can feel the hurt underneath it.

i feel like my empathy doesnt exist separately from my awareness, it exists together and amplifies each other up to the cosmic.
