Another year later....
My metabolic specialist tried metformin with me as I was keen to try a pill that could help. I had seen an article on the web about hypoglycemia being helped by metformin as it stopped the sharp rise in blood sugar so I asked to try it. Because of this my doctor wanted to monitor my blood glucose levels over a period of 5 nights and days to see what happened with the drug.Ā TheĀ continuousĀ glucose monitoring came back with some shocking results...my glucose went to below the lowest reading which was 2.2mmol whilst I was sleeping several times throughout the night and in between meals.
He immediately stopped the drug and repeated the test without it, this was when alarm bells rang as the results were just the same without the drug. My glucose levels were only kept up with eating otherwise they ran at dangerous levels. He looked at the graphs and wanted to see if he could figure out a pattern in my sugar levels to see what other tests he could do because this was not typical of pre-diabetes but of a storage metabolic disorder. He was also liaisingĀ with another endocrinologist at the same hospital who was interpreting results and trying to find an answer to my problem.
