I've been watching let's plays* for two particular games, OFF and Deltarune, and I've been thinking about my feelings of the kind of plots those games posit.
Now, I want to preface that while I like reading about the metaphors of media and what kinds of messages they present, I'm by default only capable of taking a literal interpretation of stories. (Autism diagnosis ongoing.)
In those kinds of games, a lot of emphasis is put on the moral weight of killing characters in games and how you should actually try to show mercy if you can. And of course there have been many counter-arguments about how the characters attack you first, etc.
However, to me personally, the bigger flaw that kind of undermines the whole moral question is that it's a game. The whole thing is fictional, and none of the "murders" have any actual weight to them. Undertale in particular makes a whole thing about how you should stop playing the game after getting the true ending because if you reset, everyone is back inside the time loop. But the whole game is just a game, and Sans isn't real no matter how meta you get about him. (although I've always interpreted the true ending to be on the outside of the time loop so it stays "real" even if you reset the game afterwards.)
Anyway, just vomiting some thoughts on meta-stories in games. Ignore everything I've said, if you want.
* I don't currently feel like playing those games myself at the moment, so I decided to experience them in video form instead. I *did* buy them, though.
