The Merpeople's Song
Summary: Haunted by the lingering warmth and kindness she showed him in the boathouse, Sebastian finds himself suffocating under the weight of his own gratitude and resentment. To escape the "phantom traces" of her presence, he seeks out a new intellectual distraction, using the passion for Mermish culture as a fresh shield to keep his true feelings—and the memory of her birthday gift—at bay.
Characters: Sebastian Sallow, Nerida Roberts.
Mentioned: Her (OC), Leander Prewett, Grace Pinch-Smedley.
Word Count: ~820 words
Masterlist
The boathouse had changed. The familiar, biting scent of lake salt and damp rot now had to compete with the phantom traces of her—the faint sweetness of treacle tart and the shimmering echo of her magic that seemed to cling to the cold rafters like a warmth he was no longer allowed to touch. It was no longer just a drafty sanctuary for his grief; it had become a repository for the tiny, intrusive details he couldn't stop seeing. A specific patch of floorboards near the door still seemed to shimmer with the memory of how the light had caught the gold in her hair, and every creak of the timber felt like a sharp, physical reminder of the space she had occupied.
Hi incase you didn't know today is the 2nd task of the Triwizard Tournament.

Ok I don’t ship Drarry, BUT...!
What if… when it’s Christmas 1st year and Ron’s still eating in the Great Hall and Harry goes to the library and Draco’s just sitting at a desk Harry sits next to him and...
Draco’s really confused and all that and Harry just ignores him and they somehow get into this habit of doing homework and stuff at that table and…
Harry doesn’t get one of the potions questions and Draco barely looks and just fixes his entire essay! And Draco needs help with the DADA reading and Harry tells him what’s missing.
And then one day Draco actually asks why Harry always sits next to him and Harry says like, “sometimes it’s nice to be noticed” and like Draco hadn’t even realised he was avoiding people and wincing when he talked about his dad and...
And Harry learnt morse code when he was five and Draco learnt mermish when he was seven and they pick up these little habits, swearing in mermish and tapping out patterns, and it’s just…
Voldemort, are there any languages you would like to learn ?
Of course.
I had to learn some Latin, to understand the nature of spells and to read ancient texts. Hogwarts offers this as an elective starting in Sixth year, and I took it in Sixth and Seventh - this is how I discovered I enjoy learning languages.Â
I learned Mermish fairly easily, before moving on to human languages. I spent a good portion of time in Eastern Europe, both in travels for ancient artifacts and picked up rudimentary bits and pieces of Romanian, Ukrainian, and Russian.Â
In my travels to the Americas, I picked up on a fair amount of Spanish.Â
I have set aside any language learning for now, but when I pick it back up, I would like to gain a basic knowledge of Gobbledegook - the language of the Goblins - as well as French. It seems I may as well.Â
Interesting Post I’ve Seen In A Long Time — CF and Mermaids
Now the real question...could it be possible? 🧜‍♀️
It seems a fun fantasy that would make a riveting novel! Even when I was young, I too thought I was born on the wrong side of the ocean as I seem to be drowning on air and breathing my own bodily fluids...and of course having scaly eczema does not help!
I decided to play with the idea and write a novel on the idea that we CFers are actually mermaids...
