Alts, timelapse, and no writing versions under the cut!
Hello again, ladies, gentlemen, and creatures of the night.
As of today, 25/05/2025, it marks a whole year since the release of Chapter 1 of Celestial Scales.
Yes, I'm aware on the image it says "Anniverary", my app crashed suddenly and I didn't notice it hadn't saved that change until after saving everything as pngs-- I also have no idea what happened to one of Eclipse's arms, it went missing at some point LMFAO
Anyway! Celestial Scales was like Emotional Support Staff, a pure impulsive decision - no plot, no direction, no notes, I just dove into it. Celestial Scales was a huge learning curve from ESS, since I had to learn to write facial expressions and environments in more detail than ESS.
Despite that, I've had a lot of fun writing it! It was due to finish in June of this year, but after everything I had no reason or motivation for literally anything. This is one of my first creative pieces in months-
I have only drawn Moon twice, and Sun once, and while I wanted to add them to this piece later on, I was having a lot of trouble keeping Medibang open at all, let alone saving my art at all, so a lot of stuff I wanted to add was unfortunately not an option.
I truly do thank everyone who has read my works, especially to those who have commented and shared the things I've made, especially in times where I feel so hopeless. I do read them all, and I try to respond to as many as I can. Thank you so much for reading up until this point.

Tonight, for once, you find it difficult to drift off into dreams. Itâs hardly been an issue before. In the night, while you rest, you visit your dear friendâa figment of him. A memory replaying the last tattered pieces of your home like a wind-torn sail.Â
The familiar ache in your heart does not rest. It is a machine, a relentless, chugging engine that does not know what time of day or energy you have to give, it goes on hurting, wondering about the little mer you held in your arms within the shelter of the cove. Where has he gone? Is he safe? Is he growing as big as you dream of?
You calm your breaths. Sliding your eyes close despite the lack of heaviness, excitement clings to your fingertips and toes.Â
Youâre not a child. Not anymore, but youâre not grown enough to be seen as an adult. Vanessa looks and acts like an adult. The adults talk to her like she is one. She kind of is. You think sheâs serious enough to be one, anyway.
A teenager. Thatâs what you are. Neither baby nor adult. Itâs frustrating at times when youâre so furiously captured within a body that has begun puberty but youâre still inclined to have a joy in things the little kids enjoy as well.
Fighting your jumping anticipation, you shift once under the scratchy covers. Go to sleep. Go to sleep.
The mantra works over you, and draws you down, down, down into a dark depth with no sun, only stars.Â
The black space is as peaceful as a day with no wind. The stars glittering around you are distant and far, watching you with a cool awareness. You float with no power to propel yourself through the inky sea you float within, and you wait.
He does not leave you alone for long.
Brilliant orange light pierces the darkness. The glow engulfs you until you find his head rearing through the pitch-black like a solar flare across the surface of the sun.Â
A warmth spills into your chest. Caressing your heart gently, the echo of a song a child of the sea once sang to you returns.Â
Eclipse.
A leviathanâbarely grown. His body easily dwarfs you with a long, scaled tail shimmering like pearls under moonlight, burning hot orange. Frills and fins wave through the black sea. His four limbs cut through the emptiness, propelling himself towards you until his two lower hands take you gently in his palmsâlike a person picking up a cat, you think.
Heâs so much bigger now. A sort of growth spurt has taken him this last year, lifting him out of the tiny minnow you found trapped on the beach and into this vision of a great sea beast that tears down ships and conjures storms. The frills around his face have thickened and are beginning to spread wider upon the crown of his face. His arms are thin but quickly gaining with limber, corded muscle. His colors of brilliant orange, red, and black are beginning to deepen into sharper, mature hues.
There is still so much growing left for him to do if he is to become a true monster of the ocean, as all the stories go. But he is large and he is gentle with you in his hands.Â
His maw immediately splits into a great grin. He chirps a gentle sound in greeting. You stare at him, and the familiar ache returns at the impression of his claws handling you so gently.
What a beautiful, cruel dream.
âHey, big guy,â you say softly. You softly tap the back of his hand cradling your torso. âSorry, I couldnât sleep.â
Eclipse grumbles low in displeasure. His wide eyes flare with a familiar concern before his expression picks up once more. His frills flick.
A pulse rings through your core. A question. The reason for your excitementânot anxietyâthat almost kept you from another blissful vision in the night.
He draws you close to his chest. Reclining onto his back, Eclipse lays you upon his heart. You want to laugh. How long ago was it when you cradled the little mer in your arms like a baby? Now heâs holding you effortlessly upon his chest, and you have never been smaller despite your growth spurt. Unfortunately, this is where it ends for you.Â
The thought doesnât scare you: being held in the palm of a giant mer. You knew then when you beheld his little face and his wide, scared eyes, that mers werenât as bad as the people of the island thought.Â
A great, powerful heat rolls through your body in confirmation. Then, a little nudge.
âRight,â you murmur, âTomorrow is Christmas.â
You concentrate on images of a tree decorated in tinsel and ornament, and little gifts wrapped up underneath. Thatâs what it looks like for other children when their parents are providing.Â
âItâs about gift-giving,â you study the pattern of his shining scales, âand being together with people you love.â
Immediately, your thoughts wander to the feast the island holds for everyone, including orphans like yourself. Youâll get a gift or two provided by the lady who works at the office in the center of town, paid for on behalf of the community, often generic and simple, like a good-smelling lotion or a tiny toy (though youâve outgrown such desires). Other kids stare at you when you dare to linger far too long, and often loudly wonder if youâre the same one their parents say is strange and possibly dangerous. They know itâs due to a mer.
None of it matters to you. What you care for is the food, the rich smell of mashed potatoes, and the savory scent of a Christmas ham with honey glaze. Oh, you would give your left hand to devour an entire coconut cream pie.
Eclipse trills a curious sound.
âVanessa will help me steal a pie,â you say, then laugh quietly while you outline a scale on Eclipseâs chest. Sometimes, when he has damaged or worn scales, you try to pick at them but your phantom hands seem to have no effect. âItâs not much, but itâs nice.â
Once, a few years ago, when you had woken up on Christmas day, Vanessa noticed the tears on your cheeks. Another dream of Eclipse left you with a deeper ache than usual. She didnât even open any of her gifts; she simply slipped a coconut cream pie off of the dessert table they were setting up, and she took you down to the beach. It was cool, but not cold enough for snow. Vanessa told you to dig in. The two of you ate like toddlers, eating with your hands and smearing whipped cream on your chins.Â
You looked out to the ocean, a dark gray-blue, and wondered if Eclipse would have eaten pie with you.
A flash of bittersweetness burns through you. Eclipse rests his hand gently on your back and strokes his thumb down your hair.
Eclipse rumbles as you lie on his chest, causing you to still. A terrible coolness floods your middle. You press your palm over his heart. It is not a content sound he often makes or a curious grumble. No, it is a moan of sorrow, something deep swirling within the pit of his stomach.
Again, you feel a sting of salt upon an old wound. Your heart ripples with his anguish.
âEclipse?â You canât lift your head from underneath his soothing motions. âWhatâs wrong?â
He continues to hold you with desperation as if trying to catch the moon by scooping up the reflection of lunar light upon a still, watery surface.Â
The strength of this dream of your little mer bears down upon you, and you long to close your eyes. Instead, you turn your head and kiss the firm bone of his sternum.
âDonât be sad,â you whisper, âItâs okay. Itâs alright.â
Youâre not very good at easing him. His presence is still downtrodden, but a tinge of frustration burns around it, like fire eaten away at the edges of old newspapers.
Another pulse rises through you, stronger than the rest. Then images begin to emerge in your mind. Ghostly memories of beautiful large seashells, pieces of lost treasure, and even a brass clock spring into the front of your awareness.
It perplexes you all the same, the levels of your dreams. Sometimes theyâre sweet and simple, and Eclipse only holds you while the two of you drift away. Others are like this. It makes the ache deeper, widening like a chasm until itâs nothing more than a trench where no light reaches.Â
âThatâs a lot of gifts,â you chuckle, then add, âIf you were here, Iâd give you fish. So much fish that you couldnât even eat it all. Would you like that?â
A soft rumble quakes underneath you. The impression of hunger storms through you as he provides a comically violent rendition of how he would tear apart and indulge in such a feast.Â
But he falls quiet, and you have little more to say.Â
You smile as his hand gently surrounds you in the form of a squeezing hug. You lay your head heavy on his chest and watch the starlight drift by. The constant heat in your chest is gentle and comforting, but underneath it is a salty sorrow.
He wonât be here to give fish to, and you will go to town with Vanessa tomorrow, and steal a pie.
When you wake, you feel the warmth of the dream fades. Itâs Christmas.Â
*
The sea is calm on a Christmas day. Last year, it was tormented with storms and raging seas after the harsh season of the sea leviathan attacks. You try to not remember the sickly yellow scales of the monster from the depths, nor its teeth, nor its stomach you were trapped inside.Â
Now, you guide the Rustbucket II slowly, aware of the heavy catch dragging along its side. The silver fish struggle within the net. Your old fishing ship might have buckled such a load. Eagerly, you sail deeper into the sea while everyone on the island enjoys a feast, even Vanessa.Â
You promised you would see her later. She threatened you with eating all of the coconut cream pies if you didnât keep your word.
You turn your sights to the horizon. A bright sun shines down despite the cool temperatures. Your thick sweater combats the chill in the air, and you watch the fog of your breath heat up before your red-touched nose. Fixing a strap of your overalls, you search outwards with your heart.
Eclipse?
A resounding ripple in your heart answers back. Slowing down the length of the boat, you step out of the cabin to reach the railing on the deck. The beautiful water settles around you and your small vessel. You search the deep blue. Warmth climbs into your bone marrow. The presence of a great leviathan swirls the surface before gently, he breaks through with a gentle rise of his massive form.
Dripping above you, Eclipse grins, his maw open wide and revealing sharp layers of teeth. None of the jagged fangs frightened you. Instead, leaning your arms over the railing, you gaze back with a smile on your face.
âHey, big guy.â You incline with your head towards the netting straining with the wriggling weight of your catch. âMerry Christmas.â
His eyes sweep slowly away from you and to the fish. His eyes widen, the pupils dilating in a predatorâs hunger. His tongue, shadowy and sinuous, swipes his mouth.
For me?
He lifts a claw to his chest and taps once. The bright glow within his gaze becomes candle-soft.
You nod. âFor you.â
His massive form sends ripples against your boat, rocking it in the slightest, but you flow with the bobbing effortlessly. Lowering himself to you, he presents his face close to the edge of your boat. You lean over, as far as you can without losing your footing, and press your face against his cheek.Â
A gentle, musical sound leaves him, a sigh and a purr, rumbling into one pleased sound. His eyes close. With the gentle touch of sea foam, he nuzzles you softly before you pull back. You rub your gloved hands together.
âWell, what are you waiting for? Dig in!â You gesture at the net. Eclipse trills. Rising again, his massive claws work the riggings of the net just as you have shown him before, and with delicacy, freeing the netting from your boat.Â
The catch of fish is akin to a bag of marbles in his hand. The little creatures struggle and flop about. Eclipse licks his chops once more. Opening the netting, he upends your gift and dumps it entirely into his maw. You make a slight face as he chews and a few slip away from his maws, falling into the sea and escaping.
You wait. A growing anticipation buzzes through your chest, not of your desire, but from Eclipse. Heâs already eating his gift. What more could he be excited about?
A twinge of apprehension moves through you. He doesnât think you have more fish waiting for him, does he?
Thoroughly rushing through his meal, he chews and takes a heaping swallow.
You watch his expression closely. âHow was it? Did you like your snack?â
He trills in answer, humming a song that sends musical notes washing against you. A cheer like a great splash from his massive, lower hands follows. His tail whips excitedly down below. The ocean begins to stir before he calms himself and again, lowers himself down to you.
You laugh. His excitement is infectious, and you soon shake away any concern. He likes his gift. This year you had something you were excited to give. Your dear friend gets to participate in a holiday humans celebrate, and youâre not only looking forward to pie this year.
Eclipse finishes with a thick swallow. With a satisfied swipe of his tongue, he grins at you. You arch an eyebrow back.Â
A pulse of energy, eager and excited, touches your heart.
âWhat? What is it, big guy?â You narrow your eyes in exaggerated suspicion when the leviathan tilts his head. A mischief glints in his eyes like a shimmer of stars.
Slowly, he lowers himself to you and gingerly lifts a claw to the top of your head to stroke your hair once.
Wait. Stay.
You dip your chin before Eclipse snaps his tail, and with thick ripples, bordering on crashing waves, he disappears down below. You watch his massive figure before the deep blue swallows up his bright red and orange colors.
What is he planning? Giving you another seashell? You adore the one in your home, sitting close to your bed on top of your dresser. He finds the most lovely things to bring you.
Get ready.
An image flows into your thoughts as the words enter your mind. A knife, like the one you keep in the cabin for cutting through nets. Slowly, you straighten from leaning idly against the railing. What is he going to give you that requires you to have a knife on hand?
Still, you do as he asks. You step away from the waters at last settling from his submergence and locate the little knife. Itâs a touch blunt, you need to get it sharpened. Hopefully, it will do the trick.
Venturing back to the railing, you gaze down. A bubbling begins in your chest, clashing now with nervousness amid the anticipation.Â
You furrow your brow. There are very few times in your life you have ever felt Eclipse nervous.Â
An urge to call out to him almost overtakes you, but in synchrony with your thoughts, the colossal mer arises back from the depths. He stops at his shoulder, floating in the ocean and keeping his gaze level with you before he draws out his hand.
A small bag, netted and knotted, sits on the water-dripping center of his palm. You peer closer as he offers it up. His frills flick around his head, sitting back slightly while his wide eyes watch you.Â
For you.
You glance at him before gingerly reaching out and taking the netted bag. You stare down at it, finding a few dozen oysters tied up within.Â
You lift your head. Eclipse drops his hand back into the water and presses closer to your boat. He looms in the slightest. You get the impression that if he were anywhere close to your size, he would be watching over your shoulder and checking your expression every other second.
âOkay,â you say softly. You use the knife to cut the netting and carefully set the bag down on the deck before you pluck one oyster.
Itâs dark. The meat might taste good, though youâll admit, youâve never dined on oysters before. Clams, yes, but not this.Â
Open them.
The urge returns. A swirling vortex of enthusiasm follows, and you glance up at Eclipse for a split second of confusion before you remember what oysters are also known for.
You turn the oyster over. Examining in your hand, you carefully angle the blade and break open the shell. A gray flesh collects within, and several lumps sit underneath the flesh.
Lowering the knife, you stare in silent awe. Your lips part soundlessly. Carefully, using your fingertips, you begin to push on the bumps, coaxing the little treasures out of the oyster and into your palm.
Several pale and shimmering pearls, some round, some less so, fall into your palm.
Saltwater pearls.
âOh, Eclipse.â You lift your head. âThese are beautiful. How did youâŚ?â
A hot breath leaves his mouthâas if he were holding it all the while. He dips his head. Impressions fly through your thoughts. He spoke with Vanessa (as best as he could when she cannot hear him the way you can) and she suggested a pearl necklace for a Christmas gift. Eclipse has found no such treasure in his years of collecting, but he knew what made pearls.
Another thought enters your mind. Eclipse longed to crack open the oysters himself but his claws were far too big for such little pearls.
But a gentle warmth fills your body.
Then you feel his thoughts center on you.
Except you.
You make a sound caught somewhere between a sigh and a sob. You shake your head slightly, blinking back the slight wetness threatening to plunge your face. Clutching the pearls, you look up at him.
âThank you. No one has ever given me something so precious.â You beam and gingerly roll the priceless pearls between your fingers.
He bobs his head, and settles against the side of your boat, carefully to not put any pressure onto its frame, and settles in as you crack open the neck oyster. A warmth radiates from him, filled to the brim with relief and content.
Once youâve gathered a priceless hoard of pearls, you get to your feet and kiss Eclipse on his sea-slick cheek. A gesture done in gratitude and as a gift.
Early Mermay story idea that haunts my mind and that I may write later: Y/N is an aspiring musician, but has no means to study what they love most. They grow bitter as time passes and they are unable to share the melodies from their mind with the world, incapable of conveying them through an instrument properly. Folk stories say that the ocean grants your wishes if you ask it politely and respectfully. Ambitious aspirations were a dangerous thing. Even worse when coupled with a passion and a promise.
On a stormy night, Y/N whispered their wish to the seas, and the sea eagerly answered their prayers. Three celestial Mers presented themselves and offered Y/N a deal, they will teach them the sacred secrets of their mystical song and their music, giving them all the knowledge that they possess, three main aspects of siren music. Sun offered the Music of Joy and the ability to sway the human hearts with pure euphoria, Moon offered the Music of Sorrow, capable of making even the cruelest of men weep, and Eclipse offered the Music of Divine Madness, capable of ensnaring the mind of all those who hear it and bathing it in deranged ecstasy. However, there is a price to be paid for such a service, a promise written in blood and tears.
The very moment Y/N touches the hearts of many with their melodies, when their dream finally comes true and the world swoons from their music, in that moment their freedom would be forfeit, and they would belong to the celestial Mers for all eternity. As time runs out, Y/N tries to self-sabotage their concerts to avoid fulfilling the terms of their contract, but Sun, Moon and Eclipse are equally determinted to get Y/N.
And so, on the stages of many theatres across the world, Y/N sees glimpses of familiar devils in the audience, the windows appear as if there is ocean water outside, the mirrors reflect the dark seas, cackles are heard in each dark corridor, the sound of waves always there. Deciding to take their fate in their own hands, Y/N will have to summon their own inner Joy, Sorrow and Divine Madness to buy their freedom back, and hopefully this will impress the celestial Mers enough to set them free of their debt.
I'm back once more for a lovely little request from @counterbalance who wanted Y/N and Mer Eclipse to play a little game involving food, taste buds, and guessing! This was a sweet little treat to write, ah! Eclipse loves his yummy fish and deep sea delicaties but Y/N has a few tasty morsels from on land to try and stump Eclipse with.
âââ
The sea is gentle with its waves. Softly lapping against the side of the Rustbucket II, the water holds still and calm. The late evening light burns golden over your boat. Looking out the small window of the cabin, you watch the glittering shards of light dance over the smallest stirrings of the ocean.Â
A small shiver comes over you. Tucking your thick wool coat tighter around your sweater and overalls, you sit at the humble wooden table slotted into the narrow space. Your fishing boat is far from glamorous, but it has always served you well.Â
A familiar, kind pulse fills the space of your ribcage, and you smile.
âHey, big guy.â
The resounding swell within you answers, and you nearly close your eyes to soak in the vivid desire he holds to scoop you up in his palm and gently nuzzle your face.
But not right now. You two are playing a game. The leviathan has tucked himself away in his cavern so there is no chance of cheatingânot that he would. Itâs just that his big eyes tend to stray over to whatever youâve prepared for the game when heâs lingering along the surface, and you canât help but turn your head towards whatever catch he has thrashing in the water.
Now that youâve learned just how acutely you can share things over the magical bond of your soul connection, youâve developed a guessing game.
Four bowls spread over the tabletop before you. One holds small bites of beef jerky, another salty nuts, the next some dry fruits, and lastly, a bowl of ice cream thatâs beginning to melt.Â
âAre you ready?â you whisper to the air, concentrating on the great warmth in your middle.Â
A resounding heat rolls through you. You feel the splashing excitement beginning to surge through him, and then a wayward thought of what meals heâs chosen before he cuts those off from your presence.
âNothing is spicy, I promise,â you say quickly.
A pouty swell moves through you. Of course, you donât eat spice often simply do not torment Eclipse with the wicked heat on your tongue. But you will warn him whenever youâre about to enjoy a meal with a kick to it.Â
The first time you had unknowingly subjected him to such an experience, he had been confounded by your willingness to subject yourself to such painful torment as cayenne pepper.Â
You first.
Eclipse nudges you gently, and you sit up straighter in your seat. You pluck a bit of beef jerky. Itâs a bit more expensive than youâll usually splurge on, but you want to feel his reaction to a lump of meat that is not fish.Â
Popping it in your mouth, you begin chewing. You throw all your concentration into the flavor filling your mouth, savory and rich. You chew and chew, your molars working on the tough and dried meat.Â
You feel Eclipse in the distance. His jaw unconsciously works with yours. You keep your thoughts close to him as if you drew a curtain around your mind, but he feels the sensation in your mouth all the same.Â
He knows that you donât have it a lot. It is saved for only rare occasions.
Something once alive.
âCorrect,â you say around your morsel.
You feel his mind working, jumping from textures of fish heâs caught from a large, elderly whale to an armor-crusted deep sea creature you have no name for.Â
His guess jumps into you. The latter fish he thought of.Â
âSorry, thatâs not it.â You swallow the bite with a grin. âItâs beef jerky. It comes from a cow.â
He pouts, a lighthearted tide touching against you. Itâs not meant to be easy, but the point is to feel each otherâs thought process while taking from their own experiences and trying to decipher something the other has never tried.
My turn.
âGo ahead, big guy.â You sit back in your chair. Closing your eyes, you focus on the inner tugs of your soul.Â
Eclipse lifts something to his mouth. He takes one big bite, and you frown at the texture. You feel it slipping over his tongue as if it were your own. Youâve sensed such a sensation before.Â
Oh, this is easy.
âSquid,â you point your finger upwards in an âah haâ moment.Â
A pleasurable flow moves through you. It would have been sad had you gotten that wrong, considering that itâs one of his favorites. Not that you can imagine eating squid in such a fashion.
In-kind, you move on to the salty nut. Tossing a handful into your mouth, you hardly have a second to chew before Eclipse correctly guesses the food. Itâs a favored snack of yours.Â
Too easy.
You huff out a breath at him before he dines on something else. Something new. You frown at the unique texture. Itâs supple but rich in flavor. Lean and strong. Eclipse chews it with delight before swallowing it down.
âI⌠I donât know,â you manage, stumped. âWhat is it?â
You are impressed upon with visions deep in the blue sea. Then there are silverfish. Large compared to you, but bite size for Eclipse. The long, flattened bills give away what they are.
âSwordfish.â You never would have guessed.
Eclipse rumbles in delight though admits he doesnât usually eat them. Theyâre too much of a pain to catch, but he wanted to win you on something.Â
You laugh.
âCheater.â
He rebuffs you with a promise that he would never, and you reassure him that youâre well aware. You just wanted to pull his legâor tail.
You taste the dry fruits next. The natural sweetness bursts over your tongue though kept contained without the juices. Eclipse makes a face, finding it leathery and strange.
He has no answer until you reveal it to him.Â
The last food from Eclipse has him buzzing. You stir with his energy as he sets something in his mouth, and it crunches. You almost flinch from the great sound. Itâs meaty as well.Â
âClams?â you ask, though youâre grasping at straws. âMussels?â
Eclipse trills inwardly. Wrong. Wrong.
Then he gives you an impression of a crab, a great deep sea one that almost looks too alien to walk this earth.Â
He got you again.
You straighten and grab a spoon. âI have a surprise for you.â
Eclipse immediately stills, his curiosity piqued while you spoon up a small bite of chocolate ice cream. It begins to pool the bowl, but it retains its cool richness.Â
You take the bite and slowly swirl the ice cream around with your tongue. The sweet treat immediately sends a shiver down your back.
You feel Eclipse shudder with the sensation, but his frills pick up and his presence burns within you in delight.
He loves it, though not any brain freezes that might come with it
Ice cream.
âIt sure is, big guy,â you grin. âDo you want to share some more?â

The villagersâ outrage and scorn scald your very flesh. They demand your death. The cliffside is barren of any gallows or burning stakes. You tremble in the sheer, misty cold of All Hallowsâ Eve, stealing a glance downwards at the churning indigo waves and the black-blue sky brewing with a seastorm. White crests chop upon the sandy shore and crash against the rocks directly below the cliffâs edge the preacher and constable set you upon. In the distance, thunder rumbles.

A/N: It still counts as MerMay if it's in June, right? Oh well, I always carry the spirit of the month in my heart, and I will inflict all my AUs with it. This is a threat <3 I wanted to do a little twist on my Halloween fic, so while we're getting more familiars/demons, there are a few differences between this and DT&T. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!
Please be warned that there will be spoilers for Double Toil and Trouble within this. Content warnings are tagged!
I absolutely loved writing this darling hurt/comfort fic centered on Vanessa and Mer!Eclipse from In Deep Dreams Between the Waves for @counterbalance! The unlikely pair getting to connect while Y/N feels so much for their dear friend and dear mer is delightful.
Content Warning for mentions of death/violence/being eaten alive/mind control.

The Rustbucket II floats gently along a calm ocean as the dawn waits to spread rosy-tinged fingers over the horizon and lighten the darkness of the salty waves splashing softly against the side of your boat. In the cabin, you stir gradually, still caught between dreams and the black depths filled with stars where you spend your nights with your giant mer.
A calm warmth fills your heart. The beautiful weight of Eclipseâs presence sits tenderly within you, and you swear his fingers still curve softly around you, cradling you close to his chest. His bioluminescence glows behind your eyelids with the strong, orange light of a bonfire. His soft warbles and purrs fall against you but distantly, held at armâs length by your waking consciousness.
Eclipse?
He withdrew from you softly, setting you back into your sleeping mind like he was tucking you into bed. You blink slowly, your eyelids weighed down with sleep. He doesnât often leave you so early. He looks forward to your shared dreams the most.Â
Slowly gliding your hand over the thin coverlet, you push yourself up on your bed, supporting yourself on your elbows as you force your eyes to focus on the gray-dark light touching the ocean. Itâs still so dark. A cool mist hangs in the air. The smell of seaspray clings tightly to your senses. Working up your alertness, you slip your bare feet over the creaking floors of the cabin and softly slip towards the doors leading to the deck. The glass windows are slightly stained with ocean water and you mentally jot down a note to clean those when you return to shore.
Peering out onto the deck, you find a very beautiful, rare sight.
Vanessa. Her arms are folded, leaning against the handrails with her blonde hair outside of her usual ponytail. Itâs gotten longer. It falls over her shoulders and down her back. Bangs fall into her eyes from what little of her face you see. A thick-knitted cardigan of cream warms her against the early morning chill.Â
Just beyond her, nestled in the water with his head above the surface, is Eclipse. The leviathan hides his great size just below. His lithe four arms are the length of ships and his long, serpentine tail is dark and beautifully frilled.
His eyes don't shift you, his brilliant yellow colors set entirely on your dear friend, but a gentle pulse ripples through your heart.Â
Hello, seashell.
You silently hide in the shadow of the cabin, unwilling to disturb this moment for Vanessa. She hardly ever wants to see Eclipse. He reminds her too much of the vicious mer who took hold of her and compelled her into his horrid bidding.Â
She has nightmares of his song, but she didnât last night. You would have heard her screams.
The softest sounds of Vanessaâs voice slip through the calm ocean air. You quietly hold your breath.
âI donât know how they found you,â she says softly. Her hands nervously knit one over the other, wringing and twisting her fingers. She hardly lifts her eyes to look at Eclipse. Heâs trying very hard, you realize, to make himself small and non-threatening for her.
He warbles a low sound, sending ripples across the settled ocean surface. The slightest twitch of her brow follows.
You lean closer against the door, your ear pricking towards her. Maybe you shouldnât listen in. Vanessa might have told you much but she hasnât told you everything. Now that she speaks to Eclipse, you canât help but wonder if this might be therapeutic, a way to help undo some of the damage done by Glitch.
âThere must be a difference between a mer meeting a human when the mer is small and when theyâre grown.â Her head bows deeper. âDo mers grow up without a human and decide to sink their ships, just because they can?â
Eclipse shifts in the slightest, his brilliant arrangement of frills crowning his head in bright oranges and yellows sweeping in a soft, comforting gesture. His attention remains on her. A soft note slips from him. A soothing sound you so often hear when a terrible dread creeps over you and you feel the wet walls of Glitchâs stomach closing in around you again.
Her eyes still donât stray from him. A confusing need to calm her sweeps through you. You stand silently, hugging your arms in the quiet dawn-gray light.Â
âI donât know why a bad one found me. Why did he choose me?â Vanessaâs voice wobbles wetly. You almost step closer, to lay a comforting hand on her shoulder, but Eclipse rumbles gently. The sound seems to wash over Vanessa like a wave of sea foam. Slowly, she reaches up and touches her face, smearing something wet while clearing her throat.Â
A radiance of patience and compassion fills you. The distant echo falling from Eclipse brims you with a warmth like sunlight dappling a watery surface. You shift and squeeze your hands together. You so often admire your mer in his wonderful care for you. Now you witness it for Vanessa.
She swallows thickly.Â
âI think about it sometimes,â she says so quietly you almost donât catch her words. âIf he hadnât chosen me, I would be dead like the rest of them. He would have eaten me alive.â
A tide of rage flows into your heart, not your own, but Eclipses. A shudder overtakes you. Closing your eyes briefly, you clench your teeth and breathe deeply, focusing on the wooden frame of the cabin and the soft creaking sounds of your boat.
Glitch is dead. Eclipse ripped him apart.
âBut he did choose me,â she says quietly, haunted. âIâm alive.â
A low warble leaves Eclipse. He bobs along the surface and catches her gaze.
On the smallest ray of sunlight filling the horizon, you watch a tear drop into the salt of the sea off of Vanessaâs face. Her fingers clench, twisting in her cardigan sleeves. A rattling breath leaves her.
âHe terrifies me still,â she whispers to Eclipse. âI think heâs hiding in my dreams, waiting to come back.â
A soft rumble leaves the giant mer. Eclipse slips the smallest bit closer, sending small waves out from his movement and splashing quietly against the boat. He softly parts his lips, keeping his teeth well hidden while singing a gentle note. A confirmation.
You feel his memory as if it were your own hands. One reached down into the gullet of the leviathan to find you and pull you free, and the other two pried Glitchâs jaw wider and wider until muscle and sinew ripped and bones cracked. Until the water turned red with blood. And he held you safe in his hands, your tiny body sinking into the safety of his grasp.
Heâs dead.
Vanessa lifts her eyes to him. Her bottom lip trembles.
He cannot hurt you anymore.
You breathe out softly and clutch your heart. You wish Vanessa could hear his voice.
âI know,â she says, as if she did. She hunches lower along the handrails. Even when you were at her side in the time she couldnât sleep and feared a singing voice, she never looked so small. Perhaps you are too used to her watching over you. She looked out for you when you were younger, always taller and wiser. Now you see her for the fragile state she remains in. Your heart squeezes within you.
A gentle wave of warmth seeps over your shoulders. You breathe again.
âI had no control.â Vanessa squeezes her hands into fists until the skin over her knuckles stretches white. âHe forced me to lead every single soul to their death. I was burning. Resisting him was agony like he was going to cleave my soul from my body. I could never tell him no.â
She drags the heel of her hand into her cheek, eyes squeezed shut. Eclipse stays quiet, waiting until she can breathe again. You furl and unfurl your fingers but force yourself to be as patient as Eclipse. He knows what heâs doing.
âHis song still lives in my head. When it gets too quiet, I hear it again. I think heâs back.â She trembles where she stands. Her hair falls around her shoulders and you wish to sweep it back to see her face and tell her itâs alright. Glitch is gone.Â
âWhen I was face to face with him,â she stops and bites her bottom lip. Another tear fell down her face, âI was nothing. He could have crushed me. He could have speared me with one of his claws. I could do nothing to stop him.â
A wretched sob leaves her. Horror rips from her teeth. The breath drags out of her throat and you start, your heart breaking in the echo of her sound. Tears threaten to swell within your own eyes. No. You have to be strong for her now.
She doesnât deserve this. She is as innocent as the ones Glitch killed.
Water softly sloshes down below. Vanessa stills. Rising to the handrails, one of Eclipseâs hands holds steady. He reaches the back of one crooked finger for Vanessa but leaves distance between true contact. Vanessa steps back once. Slick brine falls away from his skin and back into the water, dripping from his claws. Eclipse holds her gaze, steady despite the slightly bobbing boat.Â
Her body is rigid, taunt like a prey animal about to race from a predator. Low, coaxing sounds fall from Eclipseâs mouth as he keeps his head below. Vanessa has the choice. He will not force it but a will of simmering need to comfort one so afflicted by Glitch, just like you, heats his very heart.
You touch your chest softly. Youâre here, too. Itâs okay.
In silent awe, you watch Vanessa ball up her hands and step closer. As slow as the rising sun now sending sharp rays of light across the sea, she loosens her fist and slowly, cautiously, sets her hand on one of Eclipseâs knuckles. He softly hums and warbles in encouragement. Vanessa stares. She still shakesâyou fear she might fall apart and dissolve into another panic attackâbut she breathes. Her shoulders heave. Carefully, she looks Eclipse in the eye.
A great swirl of pride opens within you, shared equally by you and your mer.Â
âYouâre so big,â Vanessa mutters, far away, as if she canât quite wrap her mind around it. Or perhaps, sheâs thinking of another mer entirely. Her eyes fall below the water. âBut you can be gentle.â
Yes.
Eclipse shifts his gaze to you for the briefest moment. Your smile tugs on the corner of your lips. He chirrs gently before Vanessa looks up, and holds the leviathan's gaze once more.
âIâm sorry,â she whispers, âI tried to kill you when I found you with them. You were small then, even smaller than them.â
He grumbles and trills, his grin splitting across his features as if he were allowing the incident to pass like water under a bridge.
She weeps once, her back shaking. She bows low and holds tight to Eclipseâs fingers and releases what you imagine to be a great flood of anguish over whatâs been done. What Glitch did to her.
A whirlpool of revolt and hatred begins. The seaspray of Eclipseâs fury towards Glitch is a storm threatening to swallow all that draws near its spinning mouth. You lean deeper against the cabin door frame and brace yourself.
Wild visions cut across your vision, filled with violence and righteous anger. A soul bond is sacred. To take a human is to share a merâs very being with them. The dreams, the pain, the love of a mer, anchored to a little human soul. To defile such a bond, to use it for mayhem and death is unforgivable.
Eclipseâs tail flicks below. A few gurgles of water flip and Vanessa stiffens in the slightest, her eyes straying to the movement. You feel the cords of his being tightened into control. The refusal to startle Vanessa just as he closed the distance between them, and listened to her woes. His frills lower and his arms calm, holding carefully still once more.
He can be gentle.
It is wrong what Glitch did. It is unfathomable to your giant mer, and you love him more for it.
You recall asking him if he would ever do such a thing to you. You were almost washed away by his revolt and disgust for such a notion, and you were stunned. You realized your error in even asking.Â
No, Eclipse could never do such a thing to you. You look at Vanessa. She didnât deserve it.
Itâs alright, you soothe inwardly, brushing against his own heart. Sheâs safe. No mer will ever hurt her again.
A great rumble of agreement joins your thoughts. Vanessa slowly takes her hand back and wipes the slickness sticking to her skin on her cardigan.Â
âThank you,â she says at last. Her voice is small and weak, almost crackling with emotion. âIf it wasn't for you and themâŚâ
She rubs a hand over her face, pressing down on her eyes as if to shove the alternative out of her very mind.
âI donât want to think about it too much,â she concludes. Her hand lowers and she offers a rare, small smile to Eclipse. âThank you. For being good to them.â
Eclipse yearns to tell her more, to flick his fins and tell her all that Glitch did is wrong, but he can only warble. Gratitude softly blossoms within you.
Youâll make sure to tell Vanessa for him.
Using the back of her hand, Vanessa wipes her face and smears tears over her cheeks until the new sunlight shines on her skin. It will dry soon enough. A deep breath echoes softly as she fills her lungs and lifts her face towards the sky streaked with the pale light of dawn. Relief, you think, paints her eyes a softer green.
Eclipse lowers his hand with a gentle gloop of water as it falls below the surface. He turns his attention fully to you. His stunning frills catch the yellow light and brighten it. His eyes glow gently as he holds your gaze. Vanessa slowly turns to find you standing there. Her shoulders push back. She exhales a rattling breath.
âDid Eclipse wake you?â she asks in a thick voice.
âNo. I just heard your voice,â you offer gently.Â
Stepping quietly, you cross the deck. Her smile is wet but real.
You open your arms for an embrace. She accepts, falling into you with her hands hooking around you tightly as if you were a lifesaver at sea. You gather her together and hold her tight.
Eclipse watches you both. His soft trills echo before Vanessa pulls away and wipes her face one last time.
âIâll start some tea,â she says.Â
âOkay, Iâll be there in a moment,â you nod. The tiny kitchenette in your cabin is nothing grand, but it will do well enough to get a pot of tea going.
You let her go, slowly leaning back against the handrails as she disappears inside the cabin with a quiet click of the door.Â
A gentle purr from Eclipse follows, and you glance up at him with a soft joy filling you to the brim.
âHey, big guy.â You smile.
Eclipse offers his hand, water rises until it surfaces with a slickness to his palm. Without hesitation, you accept, crawling onto the pads of his fingers and ignoring how your pajamas grow damp with his touch.Â
He lifts you gently into the air. With a soft flick, he leans back and slips away from the rustbucket II but stays well within sight. You settle into his palm as if you were coming home. A pulsing warmth trickles between your ribs and into your heart. You hold his big, yellow eyes softly.
âThank you,â you murmur. You reach out and stroke his thumb. âYou were very kind to listen to Vanessa. I think it helps her a lot.â
Eclipse whistles a happy sound and youâre nearly bowled over by his sweet joy for being able to provide comfort to a human he is still getting to know. But below the harmonic chords of cheer, you feel a bitter tang. Upset at the thoughts of a terrible fate thrust upon a human. A bond crafted not to use for love, but for control.
You watch his lips pull back into a silent snarl. His teeth are powerful and large, shaped like shark incisors, but they do not scare you.Â
âHey, itâs okay,â you say softly. You shift to sit on your knees, waiting until he holds your gaze and loses the sharpness of his eyes. âItâs over now. You made sure of that.â
He killed Glitch. He told Vanessa just as much.
âYou would never do such an awful thing,â you also press. You donât need to tell Eclipse that, but you believe the mere thought grinds against his fins and scrapes his scales.Â
You think back to the tiny mer you found on the beach with a hook stuck in his lip. He was so tiny, so afraid then. You were an unknown monster reaching for him, but then you set him free. Now here he is, holding you in the palm of his hand.
You smile and open your arms, a silent request.
He answers you without hesitation. Gently lifting you to his large face, he sets you against his cheek. His nuzzle is joined by a thick, vibrating purr and you laugh softly, pressing against his slick flesh.Â
âSee? Itâs okay,â you tell him and stroke softly down the side of his face and brush a few of his swaying frills. âYou take good care of me.â
And you take care of me.
You close your eyes and press just underneath the curve of his eye.Â
âYes,â you murmur.
A gush of warmth envelopes you far more than Eclipseâs hands. Slowly, he pulls you back and with a gentle lick of his tongue, swipes half your body in his fishy saliva.
âEclipse,â you half laugh, half chastise.
Love you.
He trills and sings and lowers you back to his chest where he gently washes you with drips of salt water from his claws. You close your eyesâthis must be what kittens feel like being washed by their motherâs tongueâuntil you are less fishy and more salty smelling.
He hums low and gentle, and as the sun rises higher and higher, you rest above Eclipseâs heart. The beautiful beat within is steady. You drift upon Eclipse until Vanessaâs voice calls out from your boat. Tea is ready.
As of the 25/05/25, it'll be the first anniversary of Celestial Scales!
As my second fic, it was a huge difference in comparison to Emotional Support Staff. Suddenly, I had so many new things to consider - behaviours of the merfolk, species, my own lore, expressions, etc.
It was pretty overwhelming initially, but now I do truly enjoy looking into these things. It's kinda mental to think it's nearly been a year already, and coming up to two years for ESS! I still remember posting the first chapter, already ready to abandon it because I had zero plan for anything at all.
It's been a wild ride. I intended to finish off CS by June, but due to unfortunate circumstances I haven't worked on anything in months. I do read all my comments, I try to respond to as many as I can, and they do motivate me a lot. I really do appreciate every bit of interaction on my posts.
As for the drawing, I have a lot to add, finish, polish, and Eclipse doesn't look too great, but hey! It ain't finished. I was going to add Sun and Moon, but this sketch of Eclipse has been collecting dust for two months, and another of him has since December, even back from when I had norovirus asksks-
Also I've just finished this recently, also from December TwT
