Founders Amanda E. Johnson and K.J. Miller were inspired to create Mented Cosmetics in 2017 to provide women of color with more beauty options. “We believe every woman should be able to find herself in the world of beauty, and when we graduated from business school we didn’t see many brands telling and celebrating our beauty stories,” says Miller. That’s why we created Mented—to celebrate women of all hues and provide them with everyday beauty options.” Mented Cosmetics’ products are formulated with top tone and undertone in mind to help customize their products for women of color.

As a brand that was started for women of color by women of color, Miller encourages supporting black-owned businesses to make the beauty landscape more inclusive. “As black women, we identify with our customers that much more, and we think that’s important,” she says. “But in truth what matters most is whether you’re taking your consumers' beauty needs to heart versus simply pandering to them by including them in your marketing. Anyone doing the former and not the latter deserves to be celebrated.”
